Worcestershire Rapids Clinch Thrilling Victory Over Lancashire Lightning in Vitality Blast 2024
Worcestershire Rapids clinched a sensational victory over Lancashire Lightning in a thrilling encounter in the Vitality Blast, with standout performances from Brett D’Oliveira and Tom Taylor leading the charge.
In a nail-biting finish, Tom Taylor’s heroics in the final over propelled Worcestershire to a five-wicket win against Lancashire at Visit Worcestershire New Road.
Lancashire 169 for 5 (Croft 52*, Smith 2-32) lost against Worcestershire 172 for 5 (D’Oliveira 61, Wells 2-24) by five wickets.
The Rapids were given a 170 target on a hybrid pitch, and club captain Brett D’Oliveira’s half century set the stage for their victory.
Lancashire’s captain Steven Croft struck a half-century to help them rally from 13 for 3. However, D’Oliveira, the team captain for the Rapids, guided them to within 22 runs of victory before Taylor completed the task.
It made it possible for Worcestershire to recover splendidly from Yorkshire’s crushing of them on the opening night at Headingley. However, Lancashire’s home success over Durham meant that they were barely short of making it two straight victories. After recovering from a minor hamstring ailment, Adam Hose, the new vice captain of the Rapids, was named in the starting lineups for both teams.
Nathan Smith struck for a double-wicket maiden to give the game a thrilling start. Josh Bohannon skyed Smith to Finch at mid-on with the third ball, and George Bell nicked the final ball of the over to keeper Gareth Roderick. Luke Wells proved that attacking was the more effective strategy as he leg-glanced Smith for four before hitting the New Zealander for an enormous six over mid-wicket. However, the home team was more happy when Tom Bruce lost his middle stump after driving at Taylor.
Matty Hurst, the lightning’s keeper, swiftly found his rhythm and drove Taylor clean over the long-on boundary. 21 runs were scored in the last over of the powerplay, with maximums from Hurst and Wells. However, D’Oliveira broke the stand after scoring fifty when Smith was long-on in Wells’ attempt at another huge shot.

Throughout the middle overs, D’Oliveira and West Indies legspinner Hayden Walsh bowled tightly. Before being dismissed by Tom Taylor for a leg-before-bow, Hurst put his foot on the accelerator and made 45 off 34 balls. Then Lancashire captain Croft made sure they set a difficult goal with a half-century off 31 balls, along with Chris Green. Following Worcestershire’s reply, George Bell spilled a deep backward square leg chance, giving Matthew Waite a let-off on 3 off Tom Aspinwall.
Worcestershire began cautiously, undoubtedly aware of their failure on the powerplay against Yorkshire. However, they went into overdrive when Aspinwall and Jack Blatherwick let up a combined 31 runs in the fourth and fifth overs. Before Waite was bowled to the last ball of the powerplay by former Worcestershire fast bowler Mitchell Stanley, the opening stand was worth 55.
Josh Cobb was out at long off to Croft, but Hose, the replacement batter, went into overdrive as he hit two consecutive sixes off the same bowler. After hitting an expansive blow on the leg side, he raced to 23 off nine balls and was bowled.
Luke Wood, a former loanee from Worcestershire, then made an incredible catch at long-off to take Ethan Brookes’ wicket, and D’Oliveira was hit by Green on the leg side boundary. However, Taylor and Ed Pollock did not give up until they saw the Worcestershire home.
