Andrey Rublev’s Stunning Victory Over Jannik Sinner: Secures Spot in Masters 1000 Semifinal
Andrey Rublev produced a remarkable performance on an exciting Saturday at the Canadian Masters 1000 event, defeating first seed Jannik Sinner 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
With this triumph, Rublev wins twice in a row and advances to the Masters 1000 competition semifinals, which is a noteworthy accomplishment for his 2024 campaign.
For Andrey Rublev, a Saturday that had begun well had improved by the end of the evening.
After defeating Brandon Nakashima in the afternoon to book his first quarterfinal at the Canadian Masters 1000 event, fifth-seeded Rublev earned a trip to his fifth semifinal of the year with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory against top seed and reigning champion Jannik Sinner in the nightcap.
After Friday’s play in Montreal was postponed due to rain, both Rublev and Sinner played twice on Saturday. During the latter part of Rublev’s game, Sinner seemed to be having physical difficulties. At the end of many exhausting rallies, he was found doubled over at the back of the court, having massaged his bothersome right hip, rather than taking a medical timeout. This injury has bothered him all season.
Rublev defeated Sinner in his second career meeting against the current world No. 1; it was his first since defeating Novak Djokovic in Belgrade two summers prior. Additionally, he had dropped five of his previous seven games against Sinner.
Additionally, the Russian claimed his first-ever Masters 1000 victory in May at the Mutua Madrid Open after winning three straight games.
Rublev stopped Sinner’s momentum in its tracks in the opening game of the third set, preventing him from winning five games in a row and dropping the second set. He defeated the number one seed in the following game, dropped just three service points the remainder of the set, and broke Sinner a third time to complete the upset. Rublev turned away ten of the twelve break points he faced overall.
“I thought it was a very fantastic match. I’m glad I was able to win because I played extremely well today,” Rublev remarked after the game. “All I wanted was to show him that I could play excellent tennis and fight with him. Ultimately, I believe we had a large number of long rallies.
“Obviously, winning a match of this caliber is always wonderful, and I obviously needed those matches, particularly following some difficult times this year. So naturally, I’m content.”
Either Italian Matteo Arnaldi, who is competing in his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal, or former Top 10 player Kei Nishikori will face Rublev for a position in the championship round.
