A dull Monday’s Copa America opener saw Brazil play a somber 0-0 draw with Costa Rica while Colombia defeated Paraguay 2-1 behind goals from James Rodriguez.

In the Group D match at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Brazil, seeking a tenth Copa America title, controlled possession and territory but found it difficult to penetrate a resilient Costa Rican team. After Rodrygo’s flick on and Marquinhos’ tap-in at the back post after Raphinha’s free kick, the Brazilians appeared to have taken the lead in the thirtyth minute.

However, Costa Rica managed to escape after a painful VAR delay when the goal was disallowed due to a marginal offside call. That was as good as it went for Brazil, who struggled for the rest of the game to penetrate Costa Rica’s defense and only managed three shots on goal while controlling 73.5 percent of the play.

Costa Rica rarely made a purposeful advance, preferring to remain in the background and defend in large numbers. Throughout the whole game, the Costa Ricans were unable to muster a single shot on goal.

Colombia defeated Paraguay in Houston’s NRG Stadium to earn all three points, and as a result, they ended the day atop Group D.
