Coco Gauff Selected as Female U.S. Flag Bearer for Paris Olympics 2024 Opening Ceremony
The 20-year-old tennis phenom Coco Gauff has been selected to represent Team USA as the female flag bearer during the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Gauff becomes the youngest athlete in history to win this esteemed award and the first tennis player from the United States.
The eagerly anticipated Olympic debut of Coco Gauff is improving. The 20-year-old became the first American tennis player and youngest athlete to be selected as Team USA’s female flag bearer for Friday’s Opening Ceremony in Paris on Wednesday.
In the customary parade of nations, which this year will take place on boats as athletes float down Paris’ Seine River before marching into the Jardins du Trocadéro, Gauff will lead the almost 600 American athletes as well as staff and other dignitaries. The legendary basketball player LeBron James, who was chosen as the male flag bearer for the United States on Monday, will be standing next to her.

According to a press release, the Team USA Athletes’ Commission, which acts “as the representative group and voice of Team USA athletes,” led the voting that resulted in the selection of Gauff and James. Chris Eubanks, a fellow first-time tennis Olympian, nominated Gauff and referred to her as his “little sister” upon hearing the news.
“I know how great Coco is as a tennis player, but more importantly, I’m incredibly proud of her,” Eubanks remarked.
“She is the most deserving person for this honor, in my opinion, and I’m thrilled to see her lead our American delegation in the opening ceremony and carry the flag.”
Other well-known tennis players who have held the title of flag bearer of all time include Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Maria Sharapova, Roger Federer, and Caroline Wozniacki. Nicolas Jarry of Chile has been chosen to represent his nation as its male flag bearer in 2024.
