Euro 2024: Man Charged with Attempted Manslaughter in Axe Incident

The individual, now charged with attempted manslaughter and violations of the Weapons Act, was promptly taken into custody and presented before magistrates in Hamburg. Man Detained at Manchester Airport in Connection with Fan Disorder
A 39-year-old man from Bolton was apprehended at Manchester airport upon his return from Germany, following fan disorder incidents in Gelsenkirchen preceding England’s opening match against Serbia. This development unfolded on Monday evening, invoking the Football Spectators Act 1989.
The individual’s passport has been confiscated, and they are scheduled to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, June 18, for a Civil Football Banning Order Hearing.
Trouble had arisen in Gelsenkirchen ahead of England’s inaugural Group C fixture against Serbia, prompting investigations by the United Kingdom Football Policing Unit (UKFPU). The UKFPU’s head, Mick Johnson, confirmed that a UK fan has been detained and emphasized the consequences for those instigating disorder.
Johnson stated, “This underscores the extensive Euro 2024 football policing efforts and highlights the repercussions for supporters engaged in disruptive behavior.”
He further elaborated, “We collaborate closely with law enforcement agencies such as the Crown Prosecution Service and the courts, pursuing football banning orders where appropriate to prevent future incidents.”
Johnson also reminded fans traveling abroad to Germany to act responsibly, respect local regulations, and ensure their safety during the tournament. German authorities are also taking strict measures against lawbreakers, including fines and potential imprisonment, in coordination with UK policing efforts.
