The Mavericks defeated the visiting San Antonio Spurs 126–112 in their first game after rallying from a two-point deficit at the half and finding their rhythm in the third quarter. Luka Doncic led the Mavericks’ comeback in the second half with 28 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. In his much awaited debut, Klay Thompson scored 22 points for Dallas by shooting 6 of 10 from beyond the arc.
With a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, rookie Dereck Lively II made an impression, while Kyrie Irving added 15 points as well. P.J. Washington and Jaden Hardy each contributed 11 points, demonstrating Dallas’ depth and cohesiveness as a unit.
In the last quarter, the Mavericks increased their lead and, with just over six minutes left, established a strong 111-90 lead, effectively securing their first win.
Jeremy Sochan and Julian Champagnie both scored 18 points in standout efforts for the Spurs. In his NBA debut, star rookie Victor Wembanyama scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds, but his shooting percentage (5-of-18 overall, 1-of-8 from three) showed room for development.
In a thrilling game, Anthony Edwards’ clutch free throws with just 2.4 seconds remaining helped the Minnesota Timberwolves overcome the Sacramento Kings 117-115. Julius Randle scored a game-high 33 points, although Edwards had the lead with 32. Off the bench, Naz Reid of the Timberwolves contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds, offering vital help. Sacramento finished two points short of their lead in the third quarter, despite DeMar DeRozan scoring 26 points in his Kings debut.
The Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Denver Nuggets 102-87 in a thrilling game. Chet Holmgren recorded a double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 28 points. Nikola Jokic of Denver recorded a triple-double (16 points, 13 assists, and 12 rebounds), but the Nuggets only made 7 of 39 three-point attempts.
