Sunrisers Hyderabad Secure Playoff Spot After Rain-Hit Match Against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have officially secured a place in the IPL 2024 playoffs, marking their first top-four finish since IPL 2020.

With one point from their eliminated match against Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad guaranteed themselves a spot in the IPL 2024 playoffs and guaranteed to complete the league season in the top four. With one game left, on May 19, against Punjab Kings, they are presently up to 15 points.

After placing last in the league in 2021 and 2023 and ninth in 2022, it was their first playoff berth since the Indian Premier League in 2020.

But SRH’s chances of finishing in the top two suffered a blow. Although it is no longer solely in their control, they can still win it—they just need to defeat PBKS and pray that Rajasthan Royals, who now have 16 points, lose their last league game against Kolkata Knight Riders, who are presently atop the table.

With their final two games, this one in Hyderabad and the one against KKR at home on May 13, being wiped out without a ball being bowled, GT’s campaign came to an unfortunate conclusion. With 12 points at the end of the season, they are currently in third position, but if PBKS defeats SRH, they might move up one spot.

Most of Thursday night, the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium was covered. Following a brief period of dry weather, an 8 p.m. toss and an 8.15 p.m. start time were announced; however, the rain returned nearly immediately and did not significantly lessen after that. At 10:10 p.m., two hours and forty minutes after it was supposed to begin, the game was canceled.

It’s now a straight showdown between RCB and CSK for an IPL playoff spot

The formula to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs is straightforward for Chennai Super Kings (14 points in 13 games, NRR +0.528) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (12 points in 13 games, NRR +0.387).

India could come to a stop on Saturday. It makes perfect sense to be that way. The Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, two of the IPL’s most popular teams, will compete for the last position in the 2024 playoffs. The equation is straightforward for Chennai Super Kings (14 points in 13 games, NRR +0.528) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (12 points in 13 games, NRR +0.387), while postseason participation is already guaranteed for Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, and SunRisers Hyderabad.

To be in contention for the final position, RCB needs to win the game. In the event that CSK loses, they might still be eligible. Their Net Run-rate has to remain above RCB as the sole requirement. Former West Indies batsman Brian Lara anticipated an RCB victory before the game.

“Well, it goes beyond form alone. Since no other team has won five straight games this year, RCB is currently leading the pack. They have the highly effective Virat Kohli. The success of the team depends on the other players fulfilling their tasks as well, which is the most crucial factor. So form is one thing, I believe,” he remarked.

“RCB appears desperate to win the IPL despite their lack of previous success. They will make the playoffs with the help of this game. This is a fantastic opportunity; the squad is playing well, there is a winning mentality, and veteran players like Du Plessis, Siraj, and Virat are contributing to the success. Then, as the younger players enter, the ones who have left will be missed by one or two.

However, based on what we have seen so far, I think RCB’s momentum will continue to help them win this tournament. They will undoubtedly prevail against CSK, as I have saw them play in person.”

Over the past several games, RCB has been playing better. Following a winless start to their seven-game run, RCB has won five straight games.
