Australia’s Dominating Victory over Bangladesh in T20 World Cup
Australia defeated Bangladesh with ease courtesy to outstanding performances from Adam Zampa and Pat Cummins, as well as a strong batting effort spearheaded by David Warner in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super Eight.
Adam Zampa spearheaded the attack throughout Bangladesh’s middle overs, and Australia made a decisive start to the Super Eight with a hat-trick from Pat Cummins at the death.
Bangladesh 140 for 8 (Shanto 41, Hridoy 40, Cummins 3-29) lost to Australia 100 for 2 (Warner 53*) by by 28 runs (DLS method).
They collapsed to 140 for 8 from their 20 overs as a result. It was always going to be hard to defend, even with the slower North Sound pitch that helped the spinners.
In the first 6.5 overs, Australia’s David Warner and Travis Head combined to smash 65, and even though Bangladesh’s spinners forced their way in after that, Australia was never really challenged. Bangladesh was in a reasonable position to up the tempo at 57 for 1 at the end of the eighth over, with two set batsmen already in. However, they faced one of the most astute middle-overs players available. Litton was bowled after Zampa slid in a quick arm ball that he was unable to smash with his sweep shot.
Later, Zampa removed Bangladesh’s highest scorer of the night by hitting Shanto in front of the stumps with a quick legbreak. He finished his four overs with figures of 2 for 24 overall.
Bangladesh managed to score just 23 runs in the final three overs. It was mostly because of Cummins’s wicket-taking that Australia dominated that part of the match.
Outside off, back-of-a-length deliveries delivered his first two wickets. Attempting to drive a ball past midwicket, Mahmudullah ultimately found himself bottom-edging the ball into his stumps. Despite his attempt to ramp it up, Mahedi Hasan could only muster a nice catch to deep third.
The hitter only managed to sweep the ball over the shoulder to short fine leg on the first ball of the last over, which was a slower, lengthier ball bowled by Cummins than by Towhid Hridoy.
Although it was only their second in a World Cup, this was Australia’s fourth hat trick in this format. Brett Lee made the first one in 2007, likewise against Bangladesh.
Australia’s openers were quick to establish themselves. Warner used a reverse sweep to knock Mahedi Hasan’s opening ball of the innings for four runs. However, they really got going in Taskin Ahmed’s fourth over, as both batters clubbed straight boundaries before Head lofted a short delivery into the bleachers past cow corner. 59 were pillaged during the powerplay.
Despite taking two wickets in his opening two overs against Bangladesh, legspinner Rishad Hossain, Head, and Warner had Australia far ahead of the needed pace.

Pat Cummins Took First Hat-Trick of T20 World Cup 2024
In the last overs, the three wickets were divided across two overs. Pat Cummins, an Australian fast bowler, stole the show in the Super Eight match of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Antigua, smashing a hat-trick against Bangladesh. It was the seventh hat-trick in the history of the World Cup overall and the first of this one.
In the Men’s T20 World Cup, Cummins became the second Australian to accomplish this feat, following Brett Lee. The other bowlers to complete hat-tricks at the event were Josh Little, Karthik Meiyappan, Kagiso Rabada, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Curtis Campher (who took four in four balls).
But Cummins later acknowledged that he had overlooked the opportunity for a hat-trick. “I didn’t know I was on a hat-trick,” he stated. “I completed the previous over, watched it appear on the screen, and had completely forgotten about it by the time the next over rolled around. Imagine that everyone is like, “Oh yeah,” as Stoinis came in from the deep and started cheering. Thus, good one.”
Following a wicket-free opening over, Cummins struck for his hat-trick in overs 18 and 20. He rattled Mahmudullah’s stumps on the fifth ball of the eighteenth over, delivering a delivery that was short of length and causing an inside edge. Mahedi Hasan attempted an upper-cut on the following delivery, a back-of-a-length ball from outside the off stump, but he was caught by Adam Zampa at deep third.
Towhid Hridoy, the set hitter, was hit by a slower delivery from Cummins, who came in to bowl the last over of the innings. Hridoy scooped the ball to short fine leg. It was the sixth time in international cricket history that Mahmudullah fell prey to a hat-trick, with Hridoy leaving the game after just 28 balls.
Zampa’s 2 for 24 and Cummins’ 3 wickets helped Australia limit Bangladesh to 140 for 8. Before rain stopped play, Australia was leading their pursuit, driven by a half-century from David Warner. Australia was eventually declared the winners by 28 runs using the DLS technique.
