Sumit Nagal’s Victory Over Elias Ymer at Nordea Open 2024
Sumit Nagal, India’s top singles tennis player, got off to a great start at the ATP 250 tournament with a solid win over Elias Ymer at the Nordea Open 2024 on Tuesday.
Nagal had previously fallen behind 0-2 in head-to-head matches against the Swedish wild card, so this victory is very noteworthy.

Nagal has suffered defeats to Ymer in Split Open, Croatia, the previous year, and Lyon, France, in 2019. Nagal, currently ranked 68th in the ATP singles rankings, will next take on Argentina’s Mariano Navone, ranked 36th in the globe. Nagal will compete for India in the Olympics in Paris.
In the meantime, Rohan Bopanna and N Sriram Balaji, who will both compete in the men’s doubles tournament in Paris, are scheduled to play their first-ever match on the ATP Tour.
In the first round of the Hamburg Open, an ATP 500 event, they will play German duo Mark Wallner and Jakob Schnaitter on Wednesday.

His greatest score prior was 71.
Nagal is now the fourth-ranked Indian guy since 1973, surpassing previous world No. 71 Sashi Menon. The only other Indian players to have ranked higher than Nagal are Vijay Amritraj (ranked 18th in 1980), Ramesh Krishnan (ranked 23rd in 1985), and Somdev Devvarman (ranked 62nd in 2011).
Nagal’s recent run of strong performances has not only raised his rating but also qualified him for the singles competition at the Paris Games. Nagal has accrued 779 ATP points thus far and will be the only Indian competing in the men’s singles category at the Olympics in Paris.
At the Australian Open, the year started with a victory over Alexander Bublik, the 31st-seeded player from Kazakhstan. He participated in Wimbledon and the French Open as well.
He had won the men’s singles title at the Chennai Open in February and the Heilbronn Neckarcup 2024 Challenger in Heilbronn, Germany, earlier this month.
Since 2023, Nagal, the top-ranked Indian singles player, has won four ATP Challenger titles; his fourth clay-court victory came in Heilbronn.
