Northern Superchargers 83 (Southee 3-15, Milne 3-20) lost to Birmingham Phoenix 84 for 0 (Duckett 43*, Moeen 37*) by 10 wickets.

With a thrilling victory over the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred at Edgbaston on Tuesday, Birmingham Phoenix earned themselves a significant boost in their pursuit of the top three.

Ben Duckett and Moeen Ali helped Phoenix achieve the fastest chase in The Hundred men’s competition history after they controlled with the ball and blew the visitors away for just 83.

Ben Stokes, the captain of the England Men’s Test team, returned, and the Northern Superchargers won the toss and elected to bat.

Sadly, Stokes’ start was not good as he had to wait 20 deliveries at the non-striker’s end before Tim Southee’s ball snuck back through the gate to bowl him first ball.

The Kiwi pace onslaught by Birmingham set the tone for Phoenix’s triumph. After Matt Short was removed by Southee with his opening ball, Adam Milne removed the threatening Nicholas Pooran.

Halfway through the Superchargers’ inning, with the score at 36 for 4, Captain Harry Brook lost to Chris Wood despite his best efforts to rally from 19 for 3 with Adam Hose.

Hose 10 balls later, Duckett’s outstanding run-out did little to improve the Superchargers’ cause. With his colleague Milne taking 3 for 20 and Southee finishing his outstanding performance at 3 for 15, the visitors were bowled out for a pitiful 83, the second-lowest total in the Men’s Hundred tournament.

Duckett picked up where he left off for Phoenix on Saturday, scoring 43 off of 20 balls with opening partner Moeen, who scored 37 off of 21 balls with comparable quickness.

The Northern Superchargers’ dreams of qualifying for The Hundred Eliminator are dashed by Phoenix’s 10-wicket victory, and Moeen’s squad has advanced to third place after five games, positioning itself for the later stages of the competition.

“We assessed conditions fairly quickly, and the seamers hit a good length that proved difficult to play,” Meerkat Match Hero Southee stated. Overall, it was a very professional performance.

“I’m having fun being a member of this amazing team and I love my time here. That makes a big difference, and it feels good to record another victory.

“We realize we are playing on a different field against different opponents, so we have to start over, but a victory like that will only boost our confidence heading into our upcoming games. We should be in for another exciting set of matches given there are no easy teams in this competition.”
