In their first game under coach Vincent Kompany, Bayern Munich defeated second-division Ulm 4-0 in the German Cup on Friday. Thomas Mueller scored twice in the first three minutes of the game. In the last minutes of the second half of the German football season’s opening match, goals from Harry Kane and Kingsley Coman completed the rout. Bayern, the 20-time German Cup winners, have never advanced past the competition’s quarterfinals since taking home the triple crown in 2019–20.

After going without a trophy the previous season—their first since 2012—Bayern hired Kompany as manager in the summer. After 12 minutes, Mueller, 34, a veteran of Bayern, tapped in a pass from Joshua Kimmich. Shortly after, he scored another, tucking in a cross from Serge Gnabry.

With 11 minutes left, Coman finished off a feed from recent addition Michael Olise, and in injury time, Kane scored his first goal of the German Cup.

Even though each team trailed at one point, first-division teams Mainz, St. Pauli, and Hoffenheim all defeated lower league opponents to go past the German Cup’s opening round earlier on Friday.

On Saturday night, Bayer Leverkusen, the reigning German Cup winners and league champions from the previous season, will play Stuttgart at home in the DFL Supercup.

For the first time in twenty-three years, Ulm was promoted to the second level in the summer.
