Cincinnati Open 2024: Aryna Sabalenka Triumphs Over Iga Swiatek to Reach Final
Cincinnati Open 2024 Updates: Aryna Sabalenka demonstrated her supremacy by convincingly defeating world No. 1 Iga Swiatek 6-3, 6-3 at the Cincinnati Open 2024 semi-finals.
With this victory, Sabalenka makes her debut in the WTA and ATP Cincinnati Open finals.
Despite wasting nine set chances, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek was defeated 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday by Aryna Sabalenka, who advanced to her first-ever WTA and ATP Cincinnati Open final. A week before the US Open begins, four-time Cincinnati semifinalist Sabalenka will jump to the top of the WTA rankings.
In the final on Monday, Sabalenka will face the victor of the following match between Paula Badosa of Spain and Jessica Pegula, the sixth seed from the US. With Swiatek mounting a valiant fight in the last moments, Sabalenka faced a struggle to seal the victory.
Third place In the second set, Sabalenka had a 5-1 lead, but Swiatek proved why she is ranked #1 in the WTA as she regularly prevented her opponent from winning matches.
After nearly two hours and a break, Sabalenka ultimately secured the hard-fought triumph with a return winner on her tenth match point over Swiatek, after having been broken for 5-3.
Regarding her position in the title match, Sabalenka declared, “I finally broke the barrier.” “It was such a tough battle with Iga, and we also had to be patient with the weather.”
Several brief delays were necessary to dry the court lines due to raindrops. “On the match points I just had to tell myself that this is why she’s world number one and will fight to the last point,” Sabalenka stated. “I just had to keep doing the job and hopefully win.”
Sabalenka won as payback for losing to Swiatek in the Masters-level clay finals in Madrid and Rome last spring.
