Scottie Scheffler Aims for Complete Dominance in 2024 Golf Season- Eyeing on the Glory
Scottie Scheffler, the FedExCup leader, had the option to miss this week’s BMW Championship in order to recuperate for the TOUR Championship in Atlanta.
But his spirit of competition wouldn’t let it. In addition to winning the FedExCup, Scheffler is focused on securing the BMW Championship. Scheffler is eager for additional victories following his impressive single fourth place performance at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week.
With his commanding lead in the FedExCup, Scottie Scheffler could have skipped this week’s BMW Championship. He may have been more rested for the TOUR Championship in Atlanta the following week if he had skipped the BMW. The issue lies in Scheffler’s desire to win both the BMW and the FedExCup, as he stated at Castle Pines on Wednesday.
His goal was to win FedEx St. Jude Championship, which was held last week (solo fourth, three back). To win them all is his goal.
“I just love coming out here and competing,” said Scheffler, who leads Xander Schauffele by 1,496 points heading into this week’s FedExCup and would lead by two shots going into next week’s TOUR Championship at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club.
The FedExCup Playoffs are always meaningful because there are so many advantages to simply being here. Along with their increased points and cash, the top 50 finishers who qualify for the BMW also receive assured starts in all eight 2025 Signature Events.
For several individuals, the significance of the Playoffs lies in their unpredictable nature – the element of surprise and joy that the playoffs offer to both golf and other sports.
“I believe it was the same as when the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots and kicked off the playoffs with a 9-7 victory. and then taking home the Super Bowl trophy,” stated Billy Horschel, the 2014 FedExCup winner despite being the underdog. (He is now ranked 19th after finishing in the top 10 in his last three appearances, which included a T2 at The Open Championship.)
“We’re in the Playoffs,” Horschel continued. “Anything is possible.”
In the Playoffs, points are quadrupled, with 2,000 awarded to the winner, which can cause significant fluctuations in the FedExCup standings. Viktor Hovland appeared doubtful to finish in the top 50 into the BMW, meaning he would not be able to defend his FedExCup championship. However, he improved from 57th to 16th place after tying for second at the FedEx St. Jude. He is once again smack in the middle of things.
Regarding his comments from last week, Hovland stated, “Okay, if I have a couple good weeks, we can still win this thing.” That offers you a little bit more drive than simply turning up, and things would be a little different if this was it and there was nothing more I could do to advance in my role.
He said, “I think that’s a little exciting.”
The FedExCup Playoffs offer greater competition for Scheffler, who entered the TOUR Championship at East Lake with the lead in each of the previous two seasons but watched Rory McIlroy (2022) and Hovland win it all. Scheffler termed the FedExCup Playoffs “one of the great joys of my life” on Wednesday.
He wants to win the FedExCup, but how badly? Two years ago, when he watched McIlroy hoist the trophy after losing a six-shot lead, his tears said it all. However, good luck in persuading Scheffler to order his medals.
He was very proud of his Olympic gold medal moment (final-round 62) at Le Golf National in Paris, as well as his major wins (two Masters in three years), THE PLAYERS Championship (he became the first player to successfully defend the title this season), and all six of his PGA TOUR victories before July arrived.
Given the significance of East Lake in the season-long race, he stated, “I kind of realized this year that I don’t love playing the week before a major championship. If I were to truly look at my goal at the beginning of the season (as) to win East Lake, this would be a week where I would consider maybe taking off, especially with the points lead I have.”
“But ultimately,” he continued, “I discuss how no trophy is significantly more significant than any other.” Indeed, I would be thrilled to win the BMW as well as the FedExCup. I’ve never won a Playoffs event, so that would be something that would be incredibly nice to do. I’ve had good chances to win them and haven’t been able to achieve it.”
On Thursday, Scheffler and Schauffele will take the field at 11 a.m. ET.
