After defeating England by 150 runs in the fifth and final Twenty20 International in Mumbai on Sunday, the Indian cricket team made history. India achieved their highest-ever powerplay score of 95 runs at the cost of one wicket, with Abhishek Sharma serving as the main wrecker. As a result of Abhishek’s brilliant hitting, which saw him reach his fifty in just 17 balls, boundaries were pouring throughout the park. The southpaw scored 58 off just 21 balls by the end of powerplay.

82/1 vs Bangladesh in Hyderabad in 2024
78/2 vs South Africa in Johannesburg in 2018

Abhishek was only two balls away from becoming the fastest Indian to reach a T20I century, matching Rohit Sharma’s record. In a 2017 match against Sri Lanka, Rohit scored a century off 35 balls in Twenty20 International cricket.

In the fifth over, Abhishek smashed Jamie Overton for a huge six, completing a 17-ball half-century, the second-fastest by an Indian.

Along with Tilak Varma (24), he formed a second-wicket partnership of 115 runs.

When asked to bat first, an enraged Abhishek helped the hosts to 247 for 9 with the second-fastest T20I century by an Indian batsman off 37 deliveries, hitting seven boundaries and 13 sixes on his way to 135 (54 balls).

The England batsmen were then silenced by Indian bowlers Mohammed Shami (3/25), Varun Chakravarthy (2/25), Shivam Dube (2/11), and Abhishek Sharma (2/3), who dismissed them for 97 runs with 9.3 overs remaining.

Abhishek Sharma made a lasting impression on T20I history.
In the fifth and final match of the series against England in Mumbai on Sunday, India’s Abhishek Sharma hammered his second T20I century. In just 37 balls, Abhishek achieved the milestone, narrowly missing the all-time records set by David Miller and India skipper Rohit Sharma. The fastest century (35 balls) among hitters from Test-playing countries is held by Rohit and Miller. At one time, Abhishek appeared to be on track to overtake them, but ultimately lost out.

Nevertheless, Abhishek was able to leave his mark on history. The first player to reach the century mark in a Twenty20 International innings was him, who did it on the opening ball of the eleventh over. The record was previously held by Quinton de Kock of South Africa, who arrived there in 10.2 overs.

Sanju Samson’s dismissal after being called in to bat was an early blow to India. But Abhishek didn’t waste any time in mounting a vicious counterattack against England’s pace attack.

He took on Jofra Archer in the third over, setting off his fireworks by hitting the express pacer for two soaring sixes and a four.

The more he attacked Mark Wood and Jamie Overton, the more aggressive he became. Abhishek’s assault was particularly hard for Overton, who was hit for successive sixes in the fifth over by the southpaw to reach his half-century in just 17 balls. Abhishek persisted in his relentless assault, taking out every bowler in his path. He achieved his century in just 37 balls, which is the second-fastest by an Indian in Twenty20 Internationals.

Batting at the other end, Tilak Varma joined in the slaughter and assisted India in setting a new Powerplay record for T20 internationals. India scored an incredible 95/1 at the end of the six-over fielding restrictions, leaving England reeling.

When Abhishek scored a 28-ball century for Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in late 2024, he tied the record for the fastest T20 century by an Indian, demonstrating his capacity to hit hundreds quickly.
