Liverpool surpasses Man City to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League

LONDON:

Liverpool defeated relegation-threatened Burnley 3-1 on Saturday to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League, having been briefly unseated by champions Manchester City.

In Jurgen Klopp’s final season as manager, the Anfield team is chasing a record-tying 20th English premier league title, but they will once again face tough competition from City at the top of the standings.

Even though they weren’t playing at their best, Liverpool, who were defeated by Arsenal last week, managed to overcome Vincent Kompany’s team, who are still seven points from safety.

With one game remaining, Manchester City, who defeated Everton 2-0 at home in the early kickoff, is two points behind Liverpool in their pursuit of a record fourth consecutive English premier league championship.

At a jittery Etihad Stadium, Pep Guardiola’s team was far from their best as they struggled to break down the unyielding visitors, but Haaland scored twice in the closing minutes of the second half. These are his first strikes since coming back from an almost two-month hiatus owing to a foot injury.

Although Guardiola’s team has won their last ten games across all competitions, the Spaniard may be a little worried by how they played poorly against Everton.

“We didn’t have good body language in the first half,” the City manager said to the BBC. “If you are not positive, you cannot play good football. When you are upbeat, you perform at your best. When you begin to be depressed and moan, it doesn’t work.

“I asked them, ‘What do you expect, to come here and win 5-0?'” during our halftime conversation. Come on. Football is rough, and life is tough too.”

Due to the outcome, Sean Dyche’s team is now in the relegation zone; they will need to fight to stay in the Premier League after failing to win since mid-December.

They now face an even more difficult situation due to a 10-point reduction for breaking financial sustainability guidelines.

After Brennan Johnson scored a goal late into stoppage time to cap off an incredible comeback against Brighton, Tottenham surged back into the top four.
