Laura Wolvaardt’s Record-breaking T20I Century Leads South Africa to Victory
South Africa’s captain Laura Wolvaardt showcased her exceptional batting skills with a breathtaking 102 off just 63 balls, marking her first T20I century and steering her team to a commanding win against Sri Lanka.
Alongside Marizanne Kapp, who contributed a solid 60 runs, South Africa achieved their second-highest total in T20Is, posting 198 for 5 and ultimately overpowering Sri Lanka by 79 runs in the series opener.
The match witnessed a remarkable display of dominance from Wolvaardt and Kapp, signifying South Africa’s formidable form in the T20 format. Despite Sri Lanka’s decision to put South Africa in to bat first on a flat Benoni pitch, the duo’s partnership of 116 runs for the second wicket set the tone for a commanding performance.
Kapp’s innings, marked by precision cut shots and aggressive play, showcased her consistent form with a fourth half-century in T20Is. However, it was Wolvaardt’s standout performance that stole the spotlight, smashing 12 fours and three sixes, including a stunning shot over extra cover. Her rapid half-century off 39 balls and subsequent century off 61 balls showcased her exceptional strike rate of 161.90, well above her career average.

Despite a brief setback with the run-out of Sune Luus, South Africa’s most experienced T20I player, the team’s commanding batting display put them in a formidable position. Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, comprising six bowlers, struggled to contain South Africa’s aggressive batting, with Achini Kulasuriya being the only bowler to find success, claiming crucial wickets but failing to stem the run flow.
In response, Sri Lanka faced an uphill task, needing to chase down a daunting target of 199 runs. However, South Africa’s bowling attack, led by Kapp’s early breakthrough, coupled with disciplined bowling after a rain interruption, restricted Sri Lanka to 119 all out within 19 overs.
Harshita Samarawickrama and Hasini Perera showed resilience for Sri Lanka with scores of 38 and 30, respectively, but South Africa‘s overall dominance in all facets of the game secured them a convincing victory and an early series lead.
