One of the 147 persons against whom charges have been brought in relation to an alleged murder that occurred during the protests in Bangladesh in early August is Shakib Al Hasan, an officer at the Adabor police station in Dhaka, where the case was lodged.
Prominent cricket player Shakib Al Hasan is involved in a noteworthy legal development that has happened in Bangladesh. A murder charge has been filed against the all-rounder for the Bangladesh cricket team, according to the Dhaka Tribune. Rafiqul Islam filed the complaint, which claims Shakib is responsible for the untimely death of Islam’s son Rubel, who died on August 7 during continuing protests in Bangladesh.
According to the report, Rubel was shot in the chest and abdomen while participating in a rally on Ring Road in Adabor. After the incident, he was taken to the hospital immediately, but on August 7, he passed away. Shakib was designated as the 28th accused in the case, which was filed with the Adabor police station in Dhaka, and Ferdous Ahmed, a well-known actor from Bangladesh, was named as the 55th accused. They were both previous members of parliament for the Awami League.
In addition to being the most well-known cricket player in Bangladesh, Shakib was a member of the Awami League’s parliament until earlier this month. The Awami League was the country’s ruling party.
Sheikh Hasina, the former prime minister, was one among the 154 people named in the case. The article reportedly stated that between 400 and 500 unnamed people were also charged.
A close supporter of the outgoing prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Nazmul Hassan, resigned on Wednesday, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chose former skipper Faruque Ahmed as president.
Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, the chief executive officer of the board, told AFP that Nazmul, who also held the position of sports minister during Hasina’s 15-year reign, sent a resignation letter to the BCB. He declared, “His wish was granted.”
A month of student-led protests against Hasina’s administration resulted in over 450 deaths before she resigned as prime minister on August 5 and left the nation. Faruque “took charge immediately” after being chosen by the board of directors, according to Chowdhury.
Since 2012, Nazmul has held the position of president of BCB for several periods; his most recent term is set to expire in 2025. Faruque, the new president, participated in seven one-day international matches and temporarily led Bangladesh at the 1994 ICC Trophy in Kenya.
After the 1999 World Cup, he announced his retirement from the national squad. From 2005 until 2014, he also served as the national chief selector.
