Bayer Leverkusen Makes History: First Bundesliga Team Undefeated Throughout Season 2023-24
Bayer Leverkusen has etched its name in Bundesliga history, accomplishing an unprecedented feat of completing an entire season without a single defeat.
This season, Xabi Alonso’s treble-chasing squad has played 51 games without losing, a European record across all competitions.
Champions On Saturday, the last matchday, Bayer Leverkusen defeated Augsburg 2-1 to become the first side in Bundesliga history to finish a whole season undefeated.
In an ideal warm-up for their Europa League final against Atalanta the following week, Xabi Alonso’s treble-chasing club also extended their European record unbeaten run across all competitions this season to 51 games.
Leverkusen finished first with 90 points from 28 wins and six draws, 17 points ahead of second-place VfB Stuttgart, who defeated Borussia Moenchengladbach 4-0. On May 25, Leverkusen will play Kaiserslautern in the German Cup final.
Conversely, after losing 4-1 at Heidenheim, Cologne was demoted and moved down to join Darmstadt 98 in the standings. There will be a relegation playoff for VfL Bochum.

As the home crowd were ready to start the city’s grand celebration of the club’s first league triumph, Leverkusen started strongly and Victor Boniface intercepted a ball from Augsburg goalie Tomas Koubek to tap in for the lead in the 12th minute.
Robert Andrich, a member of Germany’s preliminary team for Euro 2024, extended the lead in the 27th minute with a close-range shot, but Augsburg rallied to tie the score just over the hour after the intermission through Mert Komur.
Leverkusen fans are optimistic that their first-ever Bundesliga trophy will be the first of three crowns in an already incredible season, even though both teams had their fair share of opportunities.
