Brazil Secures Copa America Victory with 3-1 Win Against Peru in 2019
Brazil emerged victorious with a 3-1 scoreline against Peru, claiming their first Copa America title since 2007 in a thrilling match at Maracana Stadium.
This victory marked Brazil’s ninth South American championship, showcasing their dominance in the tournament.
At a jam-packed Maracana Stadium, goals from Everton, Gabriel Jesus, and Richarlison gave Brazil its ninth South American title.
Paolo Guerrero gave Peru a late lead, but the team was unable to complete a comeback after defeating Chile in the semifinals and Uruguay in the quarterfinals.
Due to Gabriel Jesus’ second yellow card, Brazil had to play the competition with 10 men from the 70th minute onwards without the injured Neymar.
At the Maracana, Neymar and his son were seated next to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in a crowd of around 70,000 people.
In the five occasions Brazil has hosted the Copa America, it has emerged victorious.
Peru was attempting to capture its first Copa America crown in forty-four years after being crushed 5-0 by Brazil in the group stage and just avoiding early elimination. Since winning its second South American title in 1975, it had not advanced to the final.
After Brazil was eliminated in the 2018 World Cup quarterfinals in Russia, the triumph helped the squad regain some of the faith of the supporters. Additionally, it will relieve some of the burden on coach Tite, who has come under fire for the team’s subpar performances and his decisions.
Since defeating Argentina 3-0 in the 2007 Copa America final in Venezuela, Brazil had not advanced past the semifinals. In 2016, it never made it past the group stage.
Romário’s game-winning goal against Uruguay at the Maracana in 1989 marked the team’s last home Copa America victory.
Brazil’s only other championship since 2007 came from an at-home victory in the 2013 Confederations Cup.
Even though the majority of the Maracana fans encouraged them on, Brazil was unable to exert too much pressure in the opening minutes of the encounter.
In the fifteenth minute, Everton took the lead thanks to a close-range header from Gabriel Jesus, who had raced brilliantly down the right wing.
Thiago Silva, a defender for Brazil, handballed the penalty kick in the 44th minute, setting up a penalty kick for Peru’s Guerrero to level.

In the third minute of stoppage time in the first half, Gabriel Jesus gave Brazil another lead with a low shot, assisted by midfielder Arthur. After Gabriel Jesus was sent off for a violent foul on an opponent, Peru attempted to seize the initiative, but the visitors were unable to generate many meaningful opportunities.
Richarlison, who had missed a few games due to the mumps, struck a penalty kick in the 90th minute to give Brazil the victory.
Due to video reviews, both penalty kicks had to be postponed.
With 15 titles, one more than Argentina, Uruguay is the most successful country in the Copa America.
