Colombia’s 3-0 Victory over Costa Rica, Secures Quarter-Final Spot in Copa America
Colombia comfortably beat Costa Rica 3-0 in Group D of the Copa America 2024, demonstrating their superiority and securing their way to the quarterfinals.
After two games, Colombia leads their group with six points, one more than Costa Rica and Brazil.
Colombia easily defeated Costa Rica 3-0 on Friday in Group D, securing their place in the Copa America quarterfinals with goals from Jhon Cordoba, Davinson Sanchez, and Luis Diaz.
In pursuit of their first Copa America trophy since 2001, “Los Cafeteros,” who would end the evening first in the group regardless of the final score, sealed a tenth straight victory and 25th match without a loss.
Brazil and Paraguay might draw to guarantee top rank in the group, sparing Nestor Lorenzo’s team a likely quarterfinal matchup with Uruguay.
If not, Tuesday’s draw against Brazil in their final group game should do. Costa Rica is still in the running despite the loss; all they need to do is win their last game against Paraguay and hope that other outcomes go their way.

Colombia had a strong start to the game and seized the lead in the 31st minute thanks to a superb penalty kick by Liverpool winger Diaz, who scored after Costa Rican keeper Patrick Sequeira had bundled over Cordoba in the box.
In the 59th minute, Sanchez outmuscled defender Juan Pablo Vargas to head Jhon Arias’ corner past Sequeira from close range as Costa Rica attempted to equalize but left themselves vulnerable.
Sanchez celebrated his goal by holding up Jhon Lucumi’s jersey, a teammate who was injured and unable to play.
Three minutes later, Cordoba completed the scoring when, with impeccable timing, he stayed onside, grabbed James Rodriguez‘s long pass, and calmly finished past Sequeira.
