Euro 2024: Portugal’s Thrilling 2-1 Comeback Victory Over Czech Republic
Euro 2024 showdown: Portugal secured a dramatic 2-1 win against the Czech Republic in their Euro 2024 opener, thanks to an injury-time goal from Francisco Conceicao.
Despite dominating the match, Portugal needed a late rally to clinch the victory, highlighting both their attacking prowess and areas for improvement.
Portugal had numerous opportunities, but it was a regrettable mistake by the Czech Republic that saved them from certain defeat, and a crucial goal by Francesco Conceicao in stoppage time completed an unforgettable victory in their tournament debut against the Czech Republic. Even though Portugal was clearly the more superior team by a significant margin, once the final whistle blew, it couldn’t help but seem that the Czechs had been treated unfairly.
Portugal, who started their campaign on a gloomy night in Leipzig, naturally dominated much of the proceedings at the Red Bull Arena. Roberto Martinez’s teams are famed for their attacking gameplay. Although Portugal prevailed, they may regret their offensive carelessness. Martinez will undoubtedly bring up this topic with the players in the coming days as they want to build on their narrow victory on Tuesday.
Portugal had nine shots to the Czech Republic’s one at the end of the first forty-five minutes, and they had 11 passes inside the box to their opponent’s zero, to put their wastefulness into numerical terms. Two of the team’s most inventive players, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva, drifted further forward for the whole of the first half, which made it easier for the Czech players to intercept passes in the middle. This also contributed to the team’s disadvantage.
Throughout the game, Portugal mostly attacked from their left flank, with AC Milan’s Rafael Leao, Joao Cancelo, and Vitinha pushing forward with some incredible one-two combinations in the first half. The squad’s icon, striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who leads the line, squandered two easy opportunities to put his team ahead.
A flurry of Portuguese raids coincided with the start of the rain in the eleventh minute, but Jindrich Stanek, the Czech goalkeeper, was outstanding, frequently denying Portugal.
The 32nd minute of the first half presented Ronaldo with his best opportunity. He was in a good scoring position after a deft run behind the Czech defense, but Stanek’s outstanding stop kept the score tied. Diogo Dalot’s subsequent attempt missed the mark, keeping the score tied. Just before halftime, Ronaldo had another opportunity, but Stanek was up to the challenge. Portugal dominated, but at halftime the score was still 0-0.
After the break, the Czech Republic was more assured of their defensive tenacity, while Portugal sought to reorganize. Bruno Fernandes started a promising counterattack early in the second half, but his ball to Vitinha was too forceful, resulting in the loss of another chance.
Lukas Provod eventually gave the underdogs the lead with a blistering shot that sailed straight into the tournament contender’s goal from outside the penalty area. But Roberto Martinez’s quick onslaught changed the game for Portugal. After the goal, Martinez substituted Rafael Leao for Diogo Dalot and Leao for Diogo Jota.
A string of unrelenting raids eventually caused an error, with Nuno Mendes mowing down a wonderful cross from Bernardo Silva, causing Robin Hranac to stumble the ball into his own net. Then, Diogo Jota gives Portugal the lead, but the goal is called off-side, much to the booing of the Portuguese supporters.

In the final four minutes, Martinez introduced three additional substitutes, and two of them combined to score the game’s winning goal in injury time, with Pedro Neto setting up Conceicao for the incredible opening goal of his international career.
With their victory, Portugal becomes the first team in the competition to win its opening match, joining the likes of England, France, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. But Portugal is second in the group, while Turkey tops the table with a superior goal differential.
Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes First Player to Feature in 6 UEFA Euro Tournaments: How Many Records Does CR7 Hold?
Let’s look at some of Cristiano Ronaldo’s most notable accomplishments as the captain of Portugal and the first player to appear in six UEFA Euro competitions.
Cristiano Ronaldo made history in the beautiful game on Wednesday by becoming the first player to appear in six European Championship events. At the Red Bull Arena, Ronaldo got the start for Portugal against the Czech Republic in their UEFA Euro 2024 opening match.
In the 2004 Euros, the 39-year-old was awarded his first cap for Portugal. The legendary player from Real Madrid and Manchester United was a member of the Luis Figo-led team that advanced to the 2004 championship game.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner put an end to Portugal’s protracted quest for the European championship in 2016, years after the devastating loss to the giant killers Greece. In the 2016 tournament, Ronaldo led Portugal to its first-ever European championship. The Al-Nassr attacker, making his 208th appearance for Portugal at the UEFA Euros, is already the proud owner of several European Championship records.
In Portugal’s last six Euros, Ronaldo has only missed one match. In 2008, Portugal played without Ronaldo against Switzerland in their final group match. The most final appearances at the European Championships have been made by him. Ronaldo, also known as CR7, has participated in 26 games for the reigning European champions. The former striker for Juventus is followed by Pepe and Joao Moutinho. Ronaldo is the player with the most appearances at the European Championship, having made over 65 (including qualifying).
Most Goals
Ronaldo leads all goal scorers in the European Championship with 14. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the second-highest goal scorer in the Euros (including qualifying), but Ronaldo has scored 25 more goals than him. The only player to achieve 50 goals in both the Euro Qualifiers and Finals is CR7. 25 times, Ibrahimovic found the back of the net. Robbie Keane, a former captain of the Republic of Ireland, scored 23 goals throughout the Euros.
He’s the Only One to …….
Ronaldo may break the record as the oldest player to headline a top match if Portugal advances to the UEFA Euro 2024 final. In 2021, Ronaldo broke Gianluigi Buffon’s record by being the player with the most caps at the European Championship. The only player to score three goals or more in several European Championships is Ronaldo. In his inaugural campaign, the Portugal captain scored twice.
At the 2008 Euro, the all-time top scorer in football for the national team only managed one goal. In both the 2012 and 2016 tournaments, CR7 scored three goals apiece. At the UEFA Euro 2020, Ronaldo became the first player to score five goals in a single tournament. Only Ronaldo scored in five UEFA Euro campaigns, with goals in the editions of 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020.
