Germany Reveals Euro 2024 Squad in Unique Fashion for the Glory: Mats Hummels Omitted
Germany’s Euro 2024 squad unveiling took an innovative turn as Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka were notably absent despite strong performances.
The announcement, led by coach Julian Nagelsmann, featured a diverse mix of personalities reflecting German society, including students, TV personalities, singers, chefs, and radio hosts.
Julian Nagelsmann, the coach of Germany, observed on Thursday as a diverse group of individuals representing the heterogeneity of German society announced his first European Championship squad. Among the 27 names called out in a video message that included students, TV presenters, musicians, döner kebab chefs, radio presenters, and others was Stuttgart goalkeeper Alexander Nübel, the only new name.
Superb soldier. It might be from me. However, it’s our team,” Nagelsmann stated at the conclusion of the movie, which was played during a glamorous news conference in sponsor Volkswagen’s Unter den Linden Boulevard showroom in Berlin.
Regarding the unexpected announcements, Nagelsmann remarked, “It was great.” “In doing so, we engaged a large number of people in an experience that is crucial to the team and can point the way toward success in our home tournament.”
As he did in March prior to the friendly matches against France and the Netherlands, Nagelsmann is sticking to the changes he made. Wins in both matches gave Germany more confidence ahead of their hosting of the competition next month. Clearly, Nagelsmann felt that a winning club didn’t need to undergo too many changes.
Despite having good seasons, neither Leon Goretzka nor Mats Hummels, the defender for Borussia Dortmund, made a comeback. However, Nico Schlotterbeck, Hummels’ clubmate, is back for the first time since last September. On June 1, Dortmund will play Real Madrid in the Champions League final, thanks to the contributions of Hummels and Schlotterbeck.
Due to their participation in the final, Schlotterbeck’s teammate Niclas Fullkrug from Dortmund, as well as Antonio Rüdiger and Toni Kroos from Madrid, who were also nominated for the competition, will arrive in Germany later than expected.

With regard to Kroos and Rüdiger, Nagelsmann stated, “It will make the training a bit harder because they’re players that are envisaged for the starting lineup, players that are important for the team.” “I would much rather see players who are successful, have excellent games, and exude confidence.”
Though there was considerable uncertainty caused by the odd confirmations, the majority of the squad had been “leaked” by the federation through various means in the preceding days. For instance, Thomas Müller implied on Instagram that he was included before the federation officially announced it.
The most seasoned member of the team is Muller, who has represented Germany in 128 games. Manny Neuer, a colleague from Bayern Munich, has made 117 appearances, while Kroos has made 108. Before he finalizes his roster, Nagelsmann, who stated he is bringing four goalkeepers to the competition, will need to subtract one.
From June 14 until July 14, Germany will host Euro 2024. Before traveling to Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, on June 1, Nagelsmann’s squad will begin its tournament preparations in Blankenhain, central Germany, from May 26–31. On June 3, Germany plays a friendly match against Ukraine in Nuremberg. Four days later, in Monchengladbach, the team plays its final tune-up against Greece.
In Munich, the host nation takes on Scotland to open the tournament. Next, on June 19 in Stuttgart, it will play Hungary; on June 23, it will play Switzerland in Frankfurt.
Nagelsmann remarked, “I already have the idea that we can win this thing, that we can gain faith in winning it.”
