IPL 2024 Updates: Harry Brook Withdraws Due to the Death of His Grandmother
In a heartfelt announcement, Harry Brook, the promising England batter, has regrettably decided to withdraw from IPL 2024 due to the passing of his grandmother in February.
The news comes as a blow to Delhi Capitals, who acquired Brook for INR 4 crore during the auction in December.
Expressing his deep sorrow, Brook stated, “I can confirm that I have made the very difficult decision not to play in the upcoming IPL.” He continued, “I lost my grandmother last month – she was a rock to me, and I want to be with my family during this time of grieving.”
Brook’s absence from the IPL follows his earlier withdrawal from England’s Test series in India, where he had left the team during the pre-tour training camp in the UAE due to his grandmother’s declining health.
Having garnered attention for his explosive batting prowess, Brook’s IPL journey commenced in the 2023 season with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Despite a promising start, his debut season saw him scoring 190 runs in 11 matches, a performance he aims to surpass in the future.
The news of Brook’s withdrawal poses a challenge for Delhi Capitals, particularly in light of their strategy to bolster their batting lineup with Brook at No.6. However, the team, under the leadership of Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly, remains determined to overcome this setback.

Capitals’ overseas roster, comprising seasoned players like David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, and others, is now tasked with filling the void left by Brook. With Rishabh Pant taking the helm as captain, Capitals aim to bounce back from their previous season’s performance and make a mark in IPL 2024.
While Harry Brook’s decision to prioritize family during this difficult time may come as a surprise to some, it underscores the importance of mental well-being and familial bonds, values that resonate deeply in the cricketing community.
Despite the setback, Brook remains optimistic about his cricketing future, expressing gratitude for the support received from the ECB and Delhi Capitals during this challenging period.
As Delhi Capitals gear up for their first match against Punjab Kings on March 23, the absence of Harry Brook serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of sport and the resilience required to navigate life’s adversities.
