Despite having a mixed record in the competition, Bayern Munich is expected to perform well in the 2024 Champions League final, which will be held at their home stadium. Despite going undefeated in the Bundesliga under new manager Vincent Kompany, they encountered difficulties on their European tour, losing back-to-back games that eliminated them from knockout qualifying spots. But with this important victory, they are back in the running, only one point behind Dinamo Zagreb, whom Bayern crushed 9–2 in their first game.

Benfica’s defense was hard to penetrate as Bayern’s offense pushed forward. But in the 69th minute, Musiala headed in the game-winning goal thanks to Harry Kane’s setup, silence a defensive Benfica, and spark optimism for Bayern’s advancement. Musiala expressed this perspective after the game: “Sometimes, 1-0 is enough.” Bayern’s possession-based strategy produced few clear-cut opportunities. We needed to be focused and patient.

The importance of this tactical patience was underlined by coach Vincent Kompany, who said: “There are instances when winning by a slim margin is advantageous. Although the score wasn’t very impressive, the win was well-deserved.

The home crowd’s remarkable quiet during Wednesday’s match in observance of a hospitalized supporter increased the pressure on Bayern. The team’s next focus will be on a match against Paris Saint-Germain, the French champions, which is another important game in their European campaign.

Under duress, Bayern’s defense, commanded by captain Manuel Neuer, remained composed. Neuer observed the gloomy tone of the game and praised the team’s restraint in celebrating due to the medical issue in the stands: “We kept our focus, but the atmosphere was different tonight.”

Additionally, substitutions were crucial; Leroy Sane’s quickness created chances down the wing, which eventually resulted in Kane’s assist for Musiala’s goal. With Michael Olise and Musiala posing a threat from either flank, Bayern’s midfield skillfully managed the match.

With an away game against St Pauli prior to the international break, Bayern Munich will turn their attention to their Bundesliga campaign after their Champions League victory. Bayern’s tenacity and tactical flexibility under Kompany will be crucial to their pursuit of trophies this season as both domestic and European tournaments heat up.

Bayern’s triumph over Benfica marks their return to the European scene and sets the stage for a thrilling Champions League race as they aim to make it to the final at home.
