Jannik Sinner Dominated Grigor Dimitrov To Clinch Miami Open 2024 Title
Jannik Sinner’s triumph at the ATP Miami Open Masters 1000 not only secured his third title of the season but also propels him to a career-best second place in the ATP world rankings ahead of Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
At Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday, Italy’s Jannik Sinner defeated Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1 to win the ATP Miami Open Masters 1000 title.
Furthermore, the way he played—cool under pressure, making few mistakes, and winning with unwavering confidence—indicates that Sinner and Alcaraz will be locked in a protracted struggle for supremacy when Novak Djokovic eventually gives up the top rank.
Sinner concludes the hard court season with a bang, having won 25 of his previous 26 games. His lone loss came against Alcaraz in the Indian Wells semifinal.
After finishing in just 72 minutes, he added the Miami title to his victories in the Australian Open and the Rotterdam Indoors this year.
With just one break point to contend with over the whole match, Sinner never appeared to be in danger after breaking in the fifth game of the opening set.
“I felt better and better as the tournament progressed. The performance today was excellent. Sinner remarked, “I’m just proud of how I handled the situation.”
“I had a great start to the season. It never occurred to me that I would begin this way. It feels great to be in second place.”
Sinner’s second break, a stunning backhand down the line that electrified the crowd, sealed the opening set.
Sinner’s composed demeanor and impeccable technique proved to be too much for Dimitrov, who was receiving a lot of encouragement from the home crowd thanks to his signature one-handed backhand swings and willingness to go to the net.
With his superb serve and return game, the Italian broke early in the second set to take a 3-1 lead. From there, it was an easy triumph. Australian co-coach Darren Cahill, a former student of Andre Agassi and Simona Halep, was really impressed with Sinner’s attitude to the game.
He made very few unintentional mistakes, maintained excellent depth, and made it difficult for Grigor to earn points, in my opinion. If Grigor was able to win, it was through amazing tennis, according to Cahill.
“I know Jannik is playing the right way when he’s forcing Grigor to take a lot of risks and force a lot of plays. I felt he performed really well tactically today.”
Without a doubt, Dimitrov had lost against a man of the highest caliber. “I believe Jannik is playing really good tennis right now. To that, there is nothing more to say. There is no mistake about how concentrated and dedicated he is, as evidenced by the manner he makes his shots,” stated Dimitrov.
Does he have any more talent? I’m not sure. It’s up to him to prove that. However, he deserves all the credit because he has been able to play so many matches back-to-back at the same level recently.He’s also the world’s top player at the moment.”
The Italian defeated Daniil Medvedev last year and Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in 2021 to win the title in his third Miami final appearance.
In 2023, Sinner won the Masters 1000 championship in Toronto. On Monday, Dimitrov will make his first appearance in the top 10 since October 2018.
The 32-year-old defeated world No. 5 Alexander Zverev in the semifinal and Alcaraz in the quarterfinals on his way to the Miami final.
“I just want to focus on the positives this week,” he stated. “I had a strong sense of purpose the entire week.
It’s evidently Jannik’s week. He’s been playing some incredible tennis. How he’s been able to maintain that style of play is quite amazing.
I don’t believe I have a lot of time to be critical of myself. All I want to do is savor this moment too. I believe that even more than winning such kinds of matches, you need to be able to manage (losing) matches of that nature.
