Match Analysis
With 11 points, they are positioned second in the table and must now anxiously wait to find out if it will be enough to advance to the knockout stages. They are counting on the Welsh Fire or Manchester Originals to bail them out over the next two nights, but if those two clubs lose against Birmingham Phoenix or Southern Brave, respectively, they will be out. In any case, it represents a significant improvement over their last-place performance.
For Harry Brook and Andrew Flintoff’s team, Adil Rashid was the most impressive bowler, collecting 3 for 16 as part of a bowling effort that limited Spirit to just 111 off 100 balls.
Throughout the season, the England legspinner has caused problems for batsmen. On Tuesday night, he removed Matt Critchley, Shimron Hetmyer, and Andre Russell from the game in 15 balls, taking the stuffing out of a Spirit batting effort that was already flattered to deceive.
Both Michael Pepper and Keaton Jennings, who scorched beautifully for his 12-ball thirty and was being sent off by Reece Topley, who had him caught at deep point, had already returned to the pavilion after being brilliantly caught by Mitchell Santner.
Liam Dawson, who has been Spirit’s top run scorer and wicket-taker, took on the responsibility of trying to keep Spirit in the game once more. With his 27 from 19 and veteran Ravi Bopara’s 31 to help push the visitors into triple digits. However, in the intermission, the Superchargers were the smart pick.
As it happened, the weather would hinder their pursuit, but they had done enough with their openers, Graham Clark and Matt Short, to guarantee they were well ahead of Duckworth-Lewis Stern when the game was canceled. Spirit will be relieved that the campaign is finally finished despite this being their seventh defeat in eight games.
“I think we’ve got a very good squad, good batters and match-winners all the way through,” Rashid stated. “We’ve got a bit of a waiting game tomorrow and Thursday, but hopefully one of those two teams do lose and we’re good.”
