Pepe Retires: Portugal’s Legendary Defender Concludes Illustrious Career at 41
Pepe Retires at 41: After a fantastic career with Real Madrid and Porto and a record-breaking run with Portugal internationally, the legendary Portuguese defender Pepe retires at the age of 41.
Pepe, a Portuguese defender who made 141 appearances for his country and won Euro 2016, three league titles and three Champions Leagues with Real Madrid, as well as four league crowns during two stints with Porto, shone this summer at Euro 2024.
In the quarterfinals of Euro 2024, Pepe’s team, Portugal, lost to France on penalties, setting a record for the oldest player to compete in a European Championship finals competition. That was Pepe’s final match.
“I want to thank God for giving me the wisdom to be able to continue my journey,” a tearful Pepe uttered in a social media video that examined his professional life.
I also have to express my gratitude to all of the presidents who have placed bets and shown faith in my ability to do my job. To every staff member I’ve encountered at every club I’ve visited—they are the heart and soul of the organizations and the national team.
“I also like to thank all of the background participants. I would like to express my gratitude and give you all a hug. And a big thank you to all of you.”
Pepe spent ten seasons at Real Madrid, where he won three La Liga crowns, three Champions League medals, and two Club World Cups. He made 141 appearances for his country, winning the Euros in 2016.
Pepe left Porto in 2007 to join the Spanish team. He later joined the Portuguese team again in 2019 and stayed there until the conclusion of his career, winning four Primeira Liga titles in two stints.
Pepe and Cristiano Ronaldo were teammates at Real Madrid and Portugal. Ronaldo remarked of Pepe, “Friend, words cannot explain how much you mean to me. Though we achieved every possible victory on the field, my greatest accomplishment is my friendship and admiration for you. Brother, you are one of a kind. I sincerely appreciate everything you’ve done.”
