Rafael Nadal’s 6-3, 6-4 Victory Over Leo Borg at Bastad, Sets Up Clash with Cameron Norrie
Rafael Nadal, 22-time Grand Slam winner, defeated Leo Borg easily at the Nordea Open in Bastad, paving the way for a second-round meeting with Cameron Norrie.
Rafael Nadal was 15 months old in 2004 when he won his first ATP championship. Time travel to Tuesday, over 20 years later, when the two were positioned on opposing sides of the net during the Nordea Open in Bastad.
Nadal participated in his first singles encounter since Roland Garros one day after making his winning team debut alongside Casper Ruud. The 22-time major champion defeated Borg 6-3, 6-4, setting up a matchup with Cameron Norrie in the second round.
It’s an enormous honor to compete against the son of one of the greatest icons in our sport’s history. After the match, Rafael Nadal remarked on the court, “I think he played pretty well; he has a future ahead of him.”
Early on in the match, both players faced deuce on serve; in the third game, Nadal avoided a slide on the baseline. The previous event champion quickly broke for a 3-1 lead and built a rally that allowed him to conclude with a winning forehand drop shot. The Swedish player, who is the son of tennis great Bjorn Borg, battled hard to limit his deficit to just one break, but he was unable to gain ground when Nadal finished the set at love.
In the first game of set two, Borg gave the 22-time major winner two break points with a double fault. The 21-year-old dropped serve for the second time at 30-40, as the weight of Nadal’s crosscourt forehand overpowered him. The Spaniard only needed the edge to coast to an 85-minute triumph.
It is Nadal’s first time participating in the ATP 250 clay-court tournament since winning the title in 2005. The 38-year-old, who chose not to participate in the grass-court swing, moved to 8-5 on the season as he attempts to gain momentum for the Olympics in Paris.

In front of an enthusiastic audience, Nadal and Ruud defeated second-seeded Guido Andreozzi and Miguel Reyes-Varela 6-1, 6-4. This was the 38-year-old Spaniard’s first match on the tour since he was defeated by Alexander Zverev in the French Open first round in May.
He didn’t want to risk injury by switching from clay to grass and back again, so he boycotted Wimbledon. Over the past 18 months, he has been coping with injuries to his hips and abdomen.
Tuesday’s first round match of the Bastad singles event will see Rafael Nadal take on Leo Borg, the son of the legendary Bjorn Borg of Sweden.
