Roland Garros Champions Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek Triumph in Paris Olympic 2024 Openers
Roland Garros champions Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek continued their impressive form, securing victories in their opening matches as the tennis competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics began with a splash on a rainy Saturday.
Rainy Saturday saw the opening of the tennis competition at the 2024 Paris Games, where Novak Djokovic dropped just one game en route to victory.
The first Olympic tennis venue to have clay courts since the 1992 Barcelona Games was the historic Stade Roland-Garros, where Poland’s Swiatek entered the event riding a 21-match winning streak. With her third consecutive singles championship won in May, Swiatek, 23, has won four of her five majors on the terre battue.
The outcome on Saturday appeared rather familiar, despite the five-ring Olympic insignia and new 2024 Paris logos that were splattered all over Court Philippe Chatrier this week.
Swiatek easily cruised to a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu to advance to the second round. The winner between Nadia Podoroska of Argentina and Diane Parry of France will be greeted by the WTA world No. 1.
As play continued beneath the covered Chatrier on opening day, Swiatek’s opponent in the French Open final, Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, also emerged victorious, defeating Romania’s Ana Bogdan 7-5, 6-3.
Paolini awaits the victor of Poland’s Magda Linette and Mirra Andreeva, an individual neutral athlete. Over the weekend, both women won WTA titles: Andreeva won her first title in Iasi, while Linette won her third in Prague. Linette is well-known for requesting assistance from the public to go to Paris right away following her victory.

On Saturday, Spain’s Alcaraz continued his winning run under the roof of Court Suzanne Lenglen, the other covered court at the location. The defending Roland Garros winner and No. 2 seed easily defeated Hady Habib of Lebanon, 6-3, 6-1, extending his winning streak to seven matches.
