Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama Voted Unanimous Rookie of the Year
The French performer became the ninth person to win the award unanimously, following Ralph Sampson, David Robinson, Blake Griffin, Damian Lillard, and Karl-Anthony Towns, after receiving all 99 first-place votes from a panel of media voters.
On Monday, a unanimous vote selected Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs as the NBA Rookie of the Year.
The French performer became the ninth person to win the award unanimously, following Ralph Sampson, David Robinson, Blake Griffin, Damian Lillard, and Karl-Anthony Towns, after receiving all 99 first-place votes from a panel of media voters.
Chet Holmgren, the center for the Oklahoma City Thunder, finished in strong second place, earning 98 of 99 potential votes.
“I always wanted to do everything I could to support my team and improve as the season progressed,” Wembanyama stated during a TNT playoff pregame interview. “I realized that in order to accomplish this, I needed to be dominant and good on the court individually. It was therefore very important to me and quite significant to obtain. It’s finally official, which is great, because it’s always been incredibly essential.

Wembanyama, the first overall selection in the 2023 draft, lived up to the anticipation surrounding him. In 71 games, he had an average of 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.6 blocked shots, and 1.2 steals. He led the league in total blocks with 254.

Wembanyama made NBA history by being the first player to finish a season with 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocked shots, and 100 3-pointers. He joins Tim Duncan and Robinson as the only other Spurs player to have won the trophy. He is also the only player from France to do so.
