Shane Watson Shines as CSK Clinches Third IPL Title In 2018: A Victory of Perfection
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) claimed their third IPL title, led by the heroic innings of Shane Watson in 2018 IPL Season.
At last, the IPL trophy has returned to Chennai, its spiritual home. Although the city’s franchise has several difficult times, it still has the best IPL attendance and the most reliable team.
Sunrisers Hyderabad 178 for 6 (Williamson 47) lost to Chennai Super Kings 181 for 2 in 18.3 overs (Watson 117*) by eight wickets.
At last, the IPL trophy has returned to Chennai, its spiritual home. Even if the city’s franchise had some difficult times, it still has the best IPL fans and the most reliable squad, which won its third title in a chase that was both flawless and a monument to skipper MS Dhoni’s beliefs.
The 36-year-old Shane Watson, who was mocked as dad’s army for selecting players who were a touch too old, scored a century to help the Super Kings win the match. Watson had needed 11 balls to get off to a good start.
Champions Rashid Khan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar both went for 17 and 24 in their four overs each, but that did not destabilize the Super Kings team. It was imperative that neither of these two be given a wicket, but rather a maiden. Meanwhile, Watson relentlessly went after the young Punjabi bowlers, Siddarth Kaul and Sandeep Sharma, who combined for 95 runs in their seven overs.
Super Kings were asked to use every bit of their defensive reserves when they bowled first if perfection was the goal. Similar to the Super Kings, the Sunrisers batted slowly at first, held onto wickets, applied pressure to the bowlers, and then went all out in the final stages. But in the final five overs, Lungi Ngidi and Shardul Thakur bowled brilliantly to limit them to only 52 runs.
This season, CSK had defeated Sunrisers four times in their four matches, a commanding record against the team that had won the league.
Super Kings got things going with a beamer and a free hit, but they quickly recovered. Both teams were waiting to see who would blink first during this particular play segment. Sunrisers scored 42 for 1 in the Powerplay against Deepak Chahar and Ngidi without doing anything daring after losing wickets early in the first qualifier against the same opposition.
At a certain point, Shikhar Dhawan and Kane Williamson needed to step up their urgency after going at nearly a run a ball inside the Powerplay. Williamson started doing that with Dwayne Bravo, who was once again brought in early because he wasn’t feeling well at the end. When Ravindra Jadeja entered the game and bowled, Dhawan was given the chance to turn the ball back into himself. He dived down for the massive slog sweep as predicted, but he missed, causing the ball to veer onto his stumps after hitting the thigh pad. Sunrisers in the ninth, 64 for 2.
However, the Sunrisers middle order continued to produce runs on the crucial final day. In his first two overs, Shakib Al Hasan took four, six, and four wickets off Jadeja, doing to him what Dhawan wanted to accomplish. Williamson continued to touch Bravo for extra points. However, Dhoni’s magic touch was effective. Karn Sharma, who was brought in specifically for this match and has won the IPL with the Sunrisers and Mumbai Indians the past two years, had Williamson stumped off a wide delivery.

However, another batsman had an immediate impact. The innings was resumed after Yusuf Pathan struck two boundaries in the first seven deliveries he faced. Although Deepak Hooda was dismissed cheaply, Sunrisers, at 144 for 5, would have been favorites to repeat the carnage they inflicted at the conclusion of their innings in the 2016 championship.
With Bravo having bowled the 18th over and finishing with the second-worst economy rate at death this season, the carnage started with 16 coming off the 18th over. Thakur, who would bowl the twentieth, was the only man worse than him. Nonetheless, Ngidi and Thakur bowled two superb overs in which six deliveries went unpunished. With just 18 runs scored in those two overs, Super Kings were ahead in the chase.
Bhuvneshwar tormented Watson in the previous encounter between these two teams before dismissing him for a five-ball duck. Watson struck first once more. This time, in a maiden over, Bhuvneshwar twice missed the shoulder of his bat by a mere inch. Watson showed no signs of stress, if any. He would then coolly off-drive a four off Sandeep after playing out four more dots.
But it was the pressure that led to Faf du Plessis’s dismissal. Instead of bowling Bhuvneshwar for two overs at the top, one at the end, and saving one for the middle when he needs a wicket, Williamson deviated from his typical strategy. Watson and Suresh Raina shown a high degree of knowledge of the situation. They would just have to deal with Rashid in the middle overs if they could play this third over out. They succeeded in playing out, scoring 20 for 1 in five overs.
The chase’s sixth over was when the carnage that decided the outcome started. Watson became engrossed with Sandeep and Kaul. Sandeep scored 15 runs in his third over. After Kaul committed one error in his opening over, Watson was all over him. He overshot with sixteen. The asking rate was again under 10 at 51 for 1 in 7.
Given his troubles against this bowler, Williamson would have preferred to bowl Rashid to two right-hand batsman, Dhoni ideally one of them, but Super Kings simply did not take a chance against him. The following four overs yielded 5, 16, 8, and 15. It’s simple to determine which of these Rashid bowled.
By then, Watson was almost fifty, yet he had not stopped hurting Sandeep. Williamson generally returns to Bhuvneshwar at this time, but he was unable to do so this evening. In the thirteenth over, Watson struck three sixes and two fours to all but terminate the chase. Now all that was needed was around a run a ball, which Watson and Ambati Rayudu easily achieved.
