Southern Brave Dominate London Spirit in The Hundred 2024 with Standout Performances from Vince and Overton
Southern Brave easily defeated London Spirit by seven wickets thanks to a dominant display at the bat and with the ball.
Brave’s bowlers dominated the opening overs, limiting London Spirit to 138 for 9. Brave was invited to field first.
London Spirit 138 for 9 (Dawson 45, Overton 3-16) lost to Southern Brave 139 for 3 (Hughes 45, Vince 56) by seven wickets.
The men’s competition’s first winners defeated London Spirit at Utilita Bowl thanks to an outstanding performance by Southern Brave’s deadly seamers and a vicious run-chase masterminded by James Vince.
Having been asked to bat first, Brave’s attack dominated the first few overs. Left-arm spinner James Coles got Adam Rossington to mishit a lofted drive for the first wicket.
After making the catch, Craig Overton assumed command of the situation and went on to destroy the Spirit’s middle order by taking the next three wickets, all of which came from outfield catches.
Superstar Jofra Archer of England hit nine runs in his first outing in The Hundred, touching ninety miles per hour. Chris Jordan and Tymal Mills gave fierce support. With Mills pushed to backward point by Guyanese foreign star Shimron Hetymer, the Spirit were struggling at 49 for 5 from 48 balls.
Subsequently, Andre Russell accompanied Spirit captain Dan Lawrence, indicating his intentions with a first-time clubbing of the fence. Russell gave Archer his first wicket after hitting him with a short ball for the first six of the innings. Russell’s upper cut then found Overton at deep third.
Jordan made a breakaway to trap Lawrence for a determined 38 (30), with Liam Dawson providing a valiant last-minute stand. Dawson dominated the second part of the innings, making 14 off the last three deliveries. His undefeated forty-five (19) gave the Spirit momentum heading into the run-chase.
The optimism was fleeting. Vince got Brave off to a great start with four boundaries in his opening five deliveries. He then partnered with Daniel Hughes, a left-hander, to put on 95 runs for the first wicket.
Although Vince reached his seventh half-century in the competition’s history and lofted a catch to long-off with the score at 117, the final 22 runs were handled with little fuss. Hughes nicked Ravi Bopara to Rossington behind the stumps for 45 (31). With 11 balls remaining, the Brave easily defeated the required 139 to win.

Hero Meerkat “We wanted to make it as hard as possible, bowling without width, and it came off today,” Craig Overton stated. “It was a pretty good surface, it did a little bit with the new ball.”
I knew their hitters would be coming at me a little harder because our lads play at a nice tempo, so I had to be alert and hit my distances. It might work in my favor occasionally, and it certainly did today.
Since there are just seven games in the group round of this competition, it is imperative that you get off to a strong start.
“Vincey is a phenomenal player and he’s done it for years in the Vitality Blast, he’s carried that form into The Hundred and it’s nice to see him back in form today.”
