Stefanos Tsitsipas Dominates Jannik Sinner to Secure Monte Carlo 2024 Final Spot
Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Jannik Sinner in a gripping three-set match at the Monte Carlo Masters 2024 showdown.
With this victory, the Greek broke the nine-match winning streak of the Australian Open winner, who also holds titles this season from Rotterdam and Miami.
On Saturday, Jannik Sinner suffered his second defeat of the year at the hands of an inspired Stefanos Tsitsipas, who advanced the two-time winner to the Monte Carlo Masters final 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
With this victory, the Greek broke the nine-match winning streak of the Australian Open winner, who also holds titles this season from Rotterdam and Miami.
Tsitsipas will face either top-seeded Novak Djokovic or Casper Ruud in the championship match on Sunday after their meeting in the second semifinal.
“Today was a great day, I’m hoping for a good recovery and a fresh mind,” Tsitsipas said. “I hope to come out extra strong tomorrow.”
World No. 2 Sinner had a break of serve to start the final set, which saw him treated twice on his right knee by the trainer.
However, he lost it in the eighth set, allowing Tsitsipas to even the score at four with four break points saved.
After that, the Greek concluded by playing “tennis at the highest level that I’ve been able to play recently”.
After dropping out of the top 10, Tsitsipas, who is currently ranked 12th, claimed the title here in 2021 and 2022 and said he is back to his best.
“It will help my confidence to have a win like this,” he stated. “I’m aiming for the top level again.”
In the third game, Tsitsipas broke to take the first set, but the Italian battled back to tie the match in the second.
In a 13-minute marathon final set, Sinner battled to preserve five break points before breaking his way to a 3-0 lead. He then squared the match on his second set point.
“Jannik has been very consistent, he’s the toughest I’ve faced this season,” Tsitsipas stated.
“I had to get beyond challenges and figure out a method to prevail.
That makes me really proud. Jannik set me a challenging game. However, I handled the matter with absolute mastery.
