Sunrisers Eastern Cape celebrates back-to-back SA20 crowns after defeating Durban’s Super Giants
Being the topper of the group stage, Sunrisers performed magnificently in the SA League Final.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape defeated Durban’s Super Giants by an impressive 89 runs at Newlands, securing back-to-back SA20 titles.
The Sunrisers won the group stage and on Saturday they played a brilliant game in the final.
The Sunrisers amassed a massive 204/3 thanks to half-centuries from Tom Abell (55) and Tristan Stubbs (56 not out), as well as contributions from captain Aiden Markram (42), Jordan Hermann, and others.
The Super Giants were then bowled out for a pitiful 115 in 17 overs by the reigning champions.
In the Sunrisers’ innings, partnerships were vital. Following the early loss of Dawid Malan, Hermann and Abell put up a 90-run partnership for the second wicket to bring up the winning score.
Keshav Maharaj, the captain of the Durban Super Giants, responded with a double-wicket over, dismissing both of the set’s hitters, Hermann and Abell.
However, Markram and Stubbs rebuilt the innings before blowing up the opposition with 98 runs off 55 balls in the latter stages, demonstrating that the Sunrisers had plenty more in reserve.
Throughout the season, the Sunrisers’ bowling discipline has been their strongest, and their seamers performed admirably that evening.
Quinton de Kock was removed by Dan Worrall (2/15), who once again set the tone early. The Super Giants were reduced to 7/3 as Marco Jansen struck twice in the fourth over, taking out Jon Jon Smuts and Bhanuka Rajapaksa.
Wiaan Mulder tried a comeback with quickfire 38, but Ottniel Baartman (2/17) scored the game’s pivotal point at that point.
Although he had previously removed Matthew Breetzke from the game, it was his inswinger that ended it as a contest, wrapping the deadly Heinrich Klaasen on the pads first ball.
With DSG down 63/5, Jansen (5/30) had an opportunity to close out the Super Giants and complete the back-to-back victories.
