Three Times NBA Champion Danny Green Announces Retirement After 15 Seasons
Three times NBA champion, Danny Green, a sharpshooting guard, has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball, concluding an illustrious 15-year career.
In the NBA, Green has won championships with three different teams: the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, the Toronto Raptors in 2019, and the San Antonio Spurs in 2014. Green was a vital member of the starting lineup for every team that won a title, averaging 8.7 points per game over the course of 15 NBA seasons.
On his YouTube channel, Green declared, “I’m officially moving on from the game of basketball and the NBA.” “This run has been amazing. I feel a great sense of pride knowing that I can leave the game. I’m content with it. I wasn’t at first, but I believe it’s just one of those things where my body began functioning a bit differently once I became 37.
With 1,577 3-pointers made in his career, Green ranks 43rd in NBA history. Just 12 players have made as many 3-pointers and at least 40% of their shots from beyond the arc. He is one of them.
With 315 postseason 3-pointers, he is also ninth in that category.
“My body was communicating with me.” I was occasionally experiencing minor calf tightness,” said Green. Additionally, teams stop phoning you as you become older. Regretfully, compared to when I was younger, my services weren’t as in demand. It has been an incredible journey.
It may have also been referred to as an unexpected ride.
Along with Trevor Ariza, Kyle Korver, and Rashard Lewis, Green is one of just four players who have made as many 3-pointers without being selected in the first round of the NBA Draft. Cleveland selected Green with the 46th overall choice in the 2009 draft; however, the team waived him during the first season.
Eventually, Green signed with San Antonio, where he started seven seasons and contributed to the Spurs’ 2014 championship. He was acquired by Toronto in exchange for Kawhi Leonard, and he started for the Raptors in their 2019 championship run. He also started for the Lakers in their 2020 pandemic-winning squad.
“People ask me, ‘How did you figure out how to win?'” How do you develop into a leader? stated Green. “And it’s the folks who came before me, my coaches and teachers. In the end, I’m just a regular child, therefore they helped me become successful. I was not incredibly athletic, but I did have some height. I basically put in a lot of effort and was fortunate to have access to excellent tools to help me understand how to conduct myself professionally.
In May 2022, during Philadelphia’s season-ending playoff loss to Miami, he was injured by teammate Joel Embiid’s fall, tearing both his ACL and LCL. Over the next two seasons, he played in just 17 games, four of which were playoff contests.
Green stated that he hopes to work in the media and mentioned that he is considering a few chances.
“I’m eager for the upcoming chapter and adventure,” stated Green.
