In their first-ever T20 World Cup, the USA advanced to the Super Eight round when their last group match against Ireland was rained out in Florida. The USA finished second in Group A behind India with five points from the no-result.

Florida has been experiencing a lot of rain this week, and on Friday morning, the Lauderhill outfield was drenched. The rain came back, ending any hopes of the match starting, before there was time to prepare the outfield suitable for play.

The United States of America started their campaign with a win against Canada in Dallas. They then defeated Pakistan in a Super against to establish themselves as serious contenders to make it to the Super Eight. The USA arrived in Florida needing just one point from their match against Ireland to qualify, despite the fact that they were then defeated by India.

The outcome also guaranteed the United States a spot in the automatic qualifying round for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in 2026.

Ireland, Canada, and Pakistan were eliminated from Group A on Friday due to a washout. If the weather holds out, all three teams will play this weekend in Florida. Ireland plays Pakistan on Sunday, and Canada plays India on Saturday. Having lost to Canada and India prior to their withdrawal against the USA, Ireland is the only team in Group A without a victory thus far.

Pakistan’s Early Exit from T20 World Cup 2024

Due to losses to the United States and India, they are exiting the competition earlier than they have ever done.

Due to bad weather in Lauderhill, Pakistan was eliminated from the T20 World Cup 2024, with Ireland and the USA sharing the points. Along with India, the United States of America has secured their spot in the 2026 T20 World Cup and advanced to the Super Eight.

However, Pakistan’s tumultuous World Cup campaign came to an abrupt end with a precipitous departure under ominous clouds after a turbulent tournament. They didn’t have any warm-up games planned when they arrived in the USA, and weather forced the cancellation of most of their practice sessions. In their first match, the home team punished them for their unfamiliarity by defeating them in the Super Over. Later, Pakistan collapsed while chasing 120 against India, losing by six runs.

That left them reliant on other outcomes, chiefly the USA vs. Ireland game that was being played in Lauderhill. Any other result would have given the USA an insurmountable lead over Pakistan in the points total, with an Irish victory keeping Pakistan alive.

Pakistan’s sole victory to date came against Canada by seven wickets. They play Ireland on Sunday, who were also eliminated as a result of this washout, in their final remaining match.

They won’t, however, need to compete in the qualifications to guarantee a spot at the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka in 2026, given their current T20I ranking of sixth.

Pakistan was eliminated from the T20 World Cup at the earliest age ever; they had only participated in three matches when their elimination was certain. They were eliminated from the group stage in 2014 and 2016, however on all other occasions they advanced at least to the semi-finals. Pakistan is the team with the most final appearances (three apiece, shared by England), and they won the championship in 2009.
