The England men’s cricket team, representing England and Wales in international cricket, has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. Since 1997, the team has been governed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), following a long period under the stewardship of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) that began in 1903. As a founding member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), England holds Full Member status and competes in all formats of the game: Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I).
The cricket game was initially introduced to the world by the English team. But it took England almost a century to triumph in their first significant ICC events. But in all three versions, they are now among the top teams. With Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, England has recently become an unstoppable force in test cricket. They are still a formidable team in white-ball cricket.
Three ICC events have been won by the English team thus far. When Paul Collingwood guided them to victory in the T20 World Cup in 2010, they took home their first ever ICC title. Next, Eoin Morgan led England to their maiden ODI World Cup success in 2019 while Jos Buttler guided his team to their second T20I World Cup victory in 2022.

1. 2010 ICC World Twenty20 Final: England Claims Historic Victory Over Australia

The 2010 ICC World Twenty20 Final took place on May 16, 2010, at the iconic Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. This highly anticipated match featured a showdown between England and Australia, marking the third edition of the ICC World Twenty20. England triumphed in the final, securing their first World Twenty20 title with a decisive 7-wicket victory, making it their first ICC world championship in the history of cricket. This victory positioned England as the third team to win the title, following India in 2007 and Pakistan in 2009.

Australia Innings
England’s captain, Paul Collingwood, won the toss and opted to field first. Australia’s innings began unexpectedly poorly, with both openers dismissed for just 2 runs. Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin was caught for the team’s third wicket, leaving Australia reeling at 8 runs. Captain Michael Clarke and David Hussey tried to stabilize the innings, but Clarke’s dismissal left Australia at a precarious 45/4. Despite Hussey’s efforts (59 off 54 balls), Australia managed only 147 runs in their 20 overs.
England Innings
England’s innings started with an early wicket, as Lumb was dismissed for 2 runs. However, the partnership between Kieswetter and Pietersen flourished, with Kieswetter scoring 63 off 49 balls, helping England chase down the target with three overs to spare. Kieswetter was named Man of the Match, while Pietersen earned the title of Player of the Tournament.
This victory was monumental for England, marking their first ICC world championship after previous near misses in major finals, including the 1979 World Cup against West Indies, the 1987 World Cup against Australia, and the 1992 World Cup against Pakistan. England also celebrated this victory as their third world championship in a major sport, joining the ranks of their triumphs in the 1966 FIFA World Cup and the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Following this historic win, many players from the T20 final were included in England’s squad for the Ashes, which they won 3-1, retaining the Ashes for the first time in 24 years.
2. 2019 Cricket World Cup Final: England Won Their 2nd ICC Title

The 2019 Cricket World Cup Final, held on July 14, 2019, at Lord’s in London, marked a significant moment in cricket history. This thrilling One Day International match was contested between England, the host nation, and New Zealand, the runners-up from the previous tournament. It was the fifth time that Lord’s had hosted a Cricket World Cup Final, solidifying its status as a historic cricketing venue.

Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls opened the New Zealand innings, with Nicholls reaching his first tournament half-century. Captain Kane Williamson added 30 more runs, while wicketkeeper Tom Latham hit 47 to help New Zealand reach 241/8 from 50 overs. For the home team, Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett both claimed three wickets.
England Innings
In pursuit of the target, England struggled initially, finding themselves at 86/4. However, a remarkable partnership between Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler steadied the ship. Stokes played a crucial role, scoring 84 runs, leading England to a dramatic tie.
Super Over
The match proceeded to a Super Over after the scores were tied at 241. England’s Stokes and Buttler came back to the crease to take on Trent Boult’s deliveries. The two batsmen score 15 runs in the over, including a boundary to each batsman. Guptill and James Neesham faced Jofra Archer for New Zealand, with 16 runs to win.
After a poor start to the over with a wide, Archer’s over saw a steady flow of runs, including a six off the third ball from Neesham, which left New Zealand requiring two from the last delivery. Guptill struck the ball to deep mid-wicket on his first ball of the Super Over and the final ball of the match, trying to race back for the winning run. However, Roy’s throw to Buttler was excellent, and Guptill was run out well short of his crease.
With a total score of 15 runs, New Zealand equaled the Super Over, but England won the World Cup for the first time in four final appearances thanks to their better boundary total of 26 to New Zealand’s 17. With an undefeated 84 in the match and eight runs in the super over, Stokes was named Man of the Match and Kane Williamson named Player of the Series.
2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final: England Claims Their 3rd ICC Title at MCG

The 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final took place on November 13, 2022, at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia. The match featured a thrilling contest between England and Pakistan, both vying for their second ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title. England emerged victorious, winning by 5 wickets, and marking a historic achievement as they became the first men’s team to hold both the ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup titles simultaneously .

In the final, Pakistan batted first, scoring 137 runs for 8 wickets. Shan Masood was the standout performer for Pakistan, scoring 38 runs . England’s Sam Curran delivered an exceptional performance, claiming 3 wickets for 12 runs.
England Innings
England faced an early challenge, losing 3 wickets for just 49 runs in the first six overs. The turning point came in the 13th over when Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi injured his knee while attempting a catch, leaving his team at a disadvantage. Despite the setback, England’s Ben Stokes anchored the innings, scoring 52 not out and hitting the winning run with six balls to spare .
Stokes joined an elite group of players, becoming only the fifth individual to score half-centuries in multiple ICC World Cup finals . Sam Curran was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series.
