Iga Swiatek’s Dominant Win at Indian Wells Final 2024: A Triumph in Tennis History
Iga Swiatek’s remarkable victory at the Indian Wells Open, often regarded as tennis’ fifth major, showcased her unstoppable prowess as she claimed her 20th career title.
The world No. 1 defeated Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-0 on Sunday afternoon to win the championship for the second time in her career. She was on court for less than seven hours for the entire competition. Her current focus is on doing the “Sunshine Double” in Miami.
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek knows how to perform well when it comes to high stakes tennis on the biggest platforms in the sport. Once more, on a brilliant, sunny afternoon in the California desert, the women’s tennis standard bearer demonstrated exceptional focus and efficiency.
Iga Swiatek defeated Maria Sakkari in the Indian Wells Open final on Sunday afternoon to win her 20th career championship without dropping a set throughout the competition.
The world No. 1 player, who is quickly approaching two years without a break at the top of the rankings, barely spent six hours on the court during the opening set on Sunday before easily winning and moving on to the championship match. Sakkari had accrued nearly twice as much playing time—as if she needed another disadvantage.
The younger player, Swiatek, unsurprisingly jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Sakkari held her serve to win one back and start to pose a threat to her legendary opponent.
The Greek then leveled the score at 3-3 with a spectacular break of Swiatek, and bit back again to make it 4-4. But in the end, the rising star from Poland picked up a level and won the opening set 6-4.
She has won every single one of her 69 WTA 1000 matches prior to that place. And it wouldn’t stop here, either.
Nearly every rally saw Swiatek display her exceptional talent, taking down the world No. 9 and obliterating any hope for improvement. Sakkari, who had lost all hope, appeared powerless during the disastrous final match.
She took just over 20 minutes to win the second set, but it was a merciless performance that saw her destroy Sakkari 6-0 and claim her $1.1 million prize with what appeared to be relative ease.
Sakkari apologized for not being able to put up a harder fight. He has now lost eight of his ten finals. It happened really quickly. You’re a tremendous champion, a wonderful person, and an amazing player. The best is what you deserve.”

“Every year I come here, I feel a really positive vibe,” Swiatek continued, adding that the blast of confetti during the award presentation was the source of his worst fear of the day.
It’s incredible. Maria deserves congratulations. As one of these gamers, you constantly battle and experience highs and lows. You and your team are going to accomplish tremendous things.I would like to express my gratitude to my team for all of our hard work that has paid off. We have a lot to celebrate, therefore we will definitely celebrate.”
After 12 years, Victoria Azarenka was the last No. 1 seed to win the Indian Wells title. The 22-year-old will try to make history by being the first woman to win the unofficial ‘fifth major’ three times in the coming year.
She has the Miami Open in her sights this coming week, where Swiatek won the “Sunshine Double” in 2022. It appears that she won’t quit doing the trick.
Swiatek’s movement and athleticism are breathtaking, akin to a race vehicle idling before leaving a pit stop or a thoroughbred nose-diving into the Churchill Downs starting gate. It’s easy to see how she can consistently outpace the opposition when you consider the incredible spin she applies to the ball and the precise accuracy she maintains from the baseline.
With a decade or more of top-tier tennis ahead of her, it’s reasonable to assume the record will belong to the Polish powerhouse rather quickly. Swiatek, who is just 22 years old, already holds two titles in the BNP Paribas Open women’s singles record book. She joins nine other luminaries at the top of the list.
