Barbora Krejcikova Completes Quarterfinal Set with Wimbledon 2024 Victory over Danielle Collins
Barbora Krejcikova defeated Danielle Collins handily to guarantee her spot in the Wimbledon quarterfinals and destroy the American’s aspirations in her last match at the All England Club.
With a 7-5, 6-3 victory, the 31st-seeded Krejcikova showed off her adaptable style and strong play on grass.
After leaving No. 1 Court for the second day in a row to have her left leg bandaged, an American woman lost a round of 16 match shortly after. Madison Keys eventually had to withdraw in the third set against Jasmine Paolini yesterday. Danielle Collins had a difficult finish this evening against Barbora Krejcikova.
After dropping the opening set, 11th-seeded Collins asked for the trainer after misfiring on a crosscourt forehand swing volley while serving at 1-3, 0-15. Collins departed the court following a brief assessment. Returning five minutes later, Collins lost the next two points. Armed with a two-break lead, the 31st-seeded Krejcikova suffered a hiccup when serving for the match at 5-2, but in the next game, rallied to break Collins at love and emerge the victor, 7-5, 6-3.
Krejcikova has progressed to her maiden Wimbledon singles quarterfinal and has now made it to the final eight of all four major tournaments. “Being here at Wimbledon, participating in the competition and following the traditions—strawberries and white everything, you name it—I really enjoy it,” Krejcikova remarked. It’s something I enjoy and that partially reflects my personality. I enjoy the customs and all of this historical stuff.
It was disappointing to witness the collapse of such a strong contrast in style. I was courtside in San Diego last autumn for the lone previous match between these two; Krejcikova won a thrilling semifinal, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. A similarly compelling path appeared feasible as the two played a ten-game split this evening at Wimbledon.
Everything about these two is blatantly different, including tone, playing style, and emotion. Collins is observant, putting her strong groundstrokes, loud mid-rally groans, and body language on full display. Krejcikova is opaque, hiding a game of different spins and speeds behind a full poker face. Don’t be shocked if she hits slices and drives from both sides during the same rally.
Collins answered, “Yes, I believe I have a fairly aggressive game style.” Barbora’s game contains a lot of variation, in my opinion. She moves solidly. Usually, I move fairly well. Each of us can return and serve well.
Krejcikova stated of Collins, “She’s very talented.” She is incredibly resilient. I mean, she is a player that I greatly respect.

Collins served first at 5-all, but Krejcikova made a several of mistakes, won the game on her fourth break opportunity, and then served the set out at 30. Then, in the second set, Collins injured her left leg while Krejcikova was serving at 2-1.
Collins admitted, “I wasn’t thinking critically about every step that I was taking.” It’s incredible to me how much movement occurs in your head when you’re on the grass, and how much thought goes into each stride. I guess I briefly forgot about that, and as a result, I injured my leg. That was extremely upsetting and frustrating.
More poignantly, Collins’ Wimbledon career came to an end with this evening’s match. Collins’ run to the round of 16 at the All England Club was an appropriate representation of her finest Wimbledon performance, considering how well she had played in 2024.
Collins remarked, “This is one of my favorite tournaments.” “I find the historical preservation work that is done here to be really exceptional. It’s among the most memorable occasions in sports history. I always enjoy visiting this place. I feel the warmth from the folks that put so much effort behind this event really make it what it is. It is probably one of the coolest experiences you can get to have as an athlete, being able to come and compete here.”
Next up, Krejcikova takes on the fiery Jelena Ostapenko. Seven more games have been played between the two. Ostapenko has five victories, the most recent of which came a year ago in Birmingham when she claimed the grass-court championship in a straight-set match. “With Jelena, I kind of grew up,” Krejcikova remarked. She is a formidable foe. She is a skilled tennis player. I anticipate that this will be a really challenging match. This one appears to be yet another visually arresting contrast in style.
