Indian Football Update 2024: Defender Bijay Chhetri Joins Colon FC in Uruguay

Indian Football Team Update: Chennaiyin FC’s talented defender, Bijay Chhetri, has inked a loan deal with Uruguay’s Colon FC until the end of the year, marking a historic move as the first Indian footballer to join a Latin American club. 

This significant development was confirmed by Chennaiyin FC on Wednesday, making waves in the football community.

Bijay Chhetri, hailing from Manipur and aged 22, expressed his enthusiasm for this new chapter in his professional journey. His move to Colon FC, based in Montevideo and competing in Uruguay’s Segunda Division Professional, showcases the growing global recognition of Indian football talent. Currently, Colon FC holds an impressive third position in Group B of their league.

In a statement, Bijay Chhetri shared his excitement, stating, “I feel so excited to get this opportunity for the new challenge in my professional career. I hope to put in good performances to enhance my game, repay the trust shown in me by Colon FC, and to keep the Indian flag flying high.”

Acknowledging the potential impact of his success on future Indian players, Bijay added, “I am very well aware that if I do well, it can pave the way for future Indian players also to move abroad into these markets.”

Bijay Chhetri’s football journey began in 2016 with Shillong Lajong, followed by senior appearances with Indian Arrows in 2018. He has since played for various clubs like Chennai City, Real Kashmir, and Sreenidi Deccan, before joining Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) this season.

Co-owner Vita Dani of Chennaiyin FC extended her best wishes to Bijay, highlighting the significance of his move to Colon FC. She remarked, “We are extremely proud to see Bijay make his way to one of the world’s biggest football nations. Uruguay is forever etched in the game’s history, and Colon Futbol Club holds a prestigious position within that heritage.”

With this historic move, Bijay Chhetri paves the way for Indian footballers to explore opportunities on the global stage, showcasing the talent and potential within the Indian football community.
