Explosive IPL 2024 Match Recap: Fraser-McGurk’s Sensational 84 Powers Delhi Capitals to Victory
In the latest IPL 2024 showdown, Delhi Capitals showcased their prowess with an electrifying performance against Mumbai Indians, clinching a ten-run victory in a high-scoring encounter.
Fraser-McGurk’s stunning 84 off just 27 deliveries, coupled with Rasikh Salam’s crucial 3 wickets for 34 runs, proved to be the game-changers, propelling the Capitals to fifth place on the points table.
Mumbai Indians 247 for 9 (Tilak 63, Hardik 46, Rasikh 3-34, Mukesh 3-59, Khaleel 2-45) lost to Delhi Capitals 257 for 4 (Fraser-McGurk 84, Stubbs 48*, Hope 41, Nabi 1-20) by ten runs.
In addition to Fraser-McGurk, Shai Hope and Tristan Stubbs contributed significantly to DC’s victory, as they finished with a 257 for 4, having been sent in. MI, in response, lost three wickets in the powerplay, including the crucial ones of Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav; nevertheless, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya preserved their hopes.
But when Rasikh Salam got rid of Hardik and Nehal Wadhera in the same over, he changed the tide of the match. Tim David and Tilak battled till the very end, but MI ultimately failed.
With ten points from as many games, the victory moved DC up to fifth position on the standings. With six points from nine games, MI is firmly entrenched in ninth place.
As he has frequently demonstrated throughout his early career, Fraser-McGurk wasted little time getting his bat swinging and his eye in. He hit the opening three balls of the innings for four, four, and six runs with a somewhat open stance against left-arm seamer Luke Wood.
He greeted Jasprit Bumrah in the same way after scoring 19 in the opening over. With a slower ball to begin his over, Bumrah was hit for a six over long-on. Bumrah overstepped, which made matters worse, and Fraser-McGurk hammered the free-hit past long-on for four. With another boundary from Fraser-McGurk, the over concluded, making it Bumrah’s most costly over (18 runs) of the season.
DC became the joint-fastest side in the IPL to reach 50 in just 2.4 overs. The following over saw Fraser-McGurk reach his personal fifty. It was the joint-fourth fastest in the tournament’s history, coming off just 15 balls.
After Hardik entered the field for the fifth over, Fraser-McGurk was unstoppable, hitting the MI skipper for two fours and two sixes to push DC to 89 for no loss after five overs.
Fraser-McGurk, who now holds the record for the fastest List A hundred, had a brief moment of appearing to be on the verge of breaking the T20 century record when he holed out to deep midwicket for 84 off 27 balls against Piyush Chawla.
With a score of 114 for 1 in 7.3 overs, Hope made sure the momentum didn’t waver. He has been working on his six-hitting technique for the past year or so, and he has shown improvement in ODIs but not in T20s. But on Saturday, he kept DC going in the middle overs with five sixes in a 17-ball 41.
Stubbs took over when Hope fell and he quickly reached 48 not out off 25 balls. Using scoops, reverse-scoops, and pulls, he smacked five fours and a six off Wood in the eighteenth over. DC had no issues surpassing 250 despite Bumrah removing Rishabh Pant in the 19th and giving up just six runs.
Ishan Kishan struck three consecutive fours off Khaleel Ahmed in the second over, giving MI a fast start in their chase. However, Khaleel recovered well, and in his subsequent over, he had Rohit Sharma caught at mid-off. Mukesh Kumar had Kishan misjudge one from the other end, making it 45 for 2.

With two scooped sixes among his first burst of boundaries, Suryakumar Yadav got things going. However, he was dismissed for 26 off 13 balls in the final over of the powerplay after failing to pick a slower ball from Khaleel. After the powerplay, MI had slowed pace a little, but Hardik got them back on track. He struck three fours and a six off Kuldeep Yadav in the ninth over after hitting Axar Patel for a six off the final ball of the eighth over.
In Axar’s subsequent over, Tilak, who had been hitting at a run-a-ball eight up until that point, also contributed with a six and a four. Rasikh, who entered as an Impact Player, put MI farther down with a two-wicket over while they were still chasing. After Hardik mishandled a slower ball with his back to the wicket, Nehal Wadhera hit Pant with a length delivery. MI now needed to score 117 runs from seven overs while holding five wickets.
David and Tilak continued the struggle. In a 21-run 15th over, Tilak smashed Kuldeep for two fours and two sixes, reducing the score to 85 from five overs. However, Rasikh’s subsequent superb over, which ended at seven, meant that three out of 64 were needed.
In the eighteenth over, David faced Mukesh and struck him for two sixes and a four, but the next delivery saw David leg before wicket. With 25 needed from the final over, Rasikh went for 16 in the penultimate over but removed Mohammad Nabi, meaning it was Tilak or bust for MI.
After Tilak was caught short of a daring second run off the opening ball of that over, Mukesh retained his composure for the following five balls, sealing the victory for DC.
