IPL 2024 Thriller: Mumbai Indians Triumph over Punjab Kings in Nail-Biting Encounter
IPL 2024 showdown: The clash between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings witnessed a thrilling encounter as Ashutosh Sharma’s heroic innings of 61 runs off just 28 balls went in vain, with Mumbai securing victory by nine runs.
Mumbai went from ninth to seventh place in the points chart as Bumrah and Coetzee defeated a determined Kings’ chase.
Punjab Kings 183 all out (Ashutosh 61, Shashank 41, Bumrah 3-21) were defeated by Mumbai Indians 192 for 7 (Suryakumar 78, Harshal 3-31) by nine runs.
In the Indian Premier League 2024, Punjab Kings lost to Mumbai Indians in Mullanpur by nine runs, despite Ashutosh Sharma’s valiant 28-ball 61.
When Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee combined to leave the hosts 14 for 4 in 2.1 overs early in the chase, Kings were in danger of being bundled out for a cheap price. That soon changed to 77 for 6. However, Ashutosh and Shashank Singh gave the match new life with a 25-ball 41.
Only 25 more runs were needed for Kings with three overs remaining. But Mumbai never let up the lead after Ashutosh was bowled out at the beginning of the eighteenth over. Mumbai moved up from ninth to seventh in the standings as the Kings suffered their fourth defeat in the final over of the season and their fifth overall.
Suryakumar Special Takes MI To 192
Suryakumar Yadav has played four innings this season and made two ducks and two half-centuries before to this game. He entered the game on Thursday at No. 3 after Ishan Kishan was dismissed by Rabada in the third over, and he quickly made an impact by hitting two consecutive fours off the same bowler. Since it wasn’t a duck, he would eventually reach the fifty threshold.
In the fifth over, Suryakumar used his wrists to put Harshal Patel out for another boundary. In the sixth over, he cut Sam Curran off the off side. In the powerplay, he and Rohit Sharma helped Mumbai reach 54 for 1.
They would score 81 runs in 57 balls as a team, Rohit adding just 26 to the stand. After the powerplay, Suryakumar overpowered spinners Harpreet and Livingstone, while Rohit struggled to rediscover the same fluency after being deprived of strike for the majority of the session. When he attempted to knock Curran over the covers in the twelfth over, he fell for 35 after hitting the point fielder.
Suryakumar had already scored his fifty in thirty-four balls by the time Rohit left. Even though his innings was abnormally slow by his norms, incorrect strokes were also forced by the two-paced surface and the change-up deliveries bowled by Arshdeep Singh and Harshal.
Tilak Varma’s dismissal of Arshdeep in the fifteenth over was necessary for Suryakumar to also emerge victorious in his recognizable, signature style. Rabada was hit for four, six, and six in the sixteenth over, following his successful review of an LBW call earlier in the over.
Mumbai reached 148 for 2 in 16 overs thanks to an 18-run Rabada over, and with big hitters still to come, a score of over 200 appeared likely. Mumbai could not get much out of Hardik or Tim David, and Curran dismissed Suryakumar for a 53-ball 78 (only the second time he had faced 50+ balls in an IPL innings). Harshal kept Mumbai below 200 with a seven-run, three-wicket 20th over off the bowl.

The innings ended with 192 for 7, the highest first-innings IPL total in Mullanpur. Suryakumar told the announcers he thought the score was “way above par,” and his prediction came to pass, though not before Mumbai survived a severe scare. Coetzee had Prabhsimran Singh caught behind down the leg side in the opening over, putting the Kings on the mat early in their chase of 193. Taking the new ball, Bumrah struck immediately at the other end, dismissing rookie Rilee Rossouw for a duck and the new opener Sam Curran for six.
Batting at number four, Liam Livingstone lasted only two balls before his effort to rip off a 150 kph Coetzee delivery was cut back to the bowler. Legspinner Shreyas Gopal trapped Harpreet Singh Bhatia, turning a score of 14 for 4 into 49 for 5. Jitesh Sharma was then leg before wicket for nine by Madhwal, seeing the score rise to 77 for 6.
Ashutosh Almost Pulled Of Another Miracle
Shashank had kept Kings’ score moving with the occasional boundary by the time Ashutosh arrived. Shashank hit three sixes and two fours to reach 41 in 25 balls off of his No. 6 position, but runs did not start to flow from either end until Ashutosh joined him.
In the tenth over, Ashutosh hit Madhwal for a six over a superb leg, then in the eleventh, he took Romario Shepherd for four and six. He also hit a six off Hardik Pandya in the twelfth over, and in the 13th over, he swept the fast bowler for a bold six, following Bumrah’s dismissal of Shashank. After that, Ashutosh and Harpreet Brar took Coetzee for 13 runs in the fifteenth over, amassing 65 runs in the five overs.
However, Kings gained the lead in the game for the first time during the 16th over of the chase. Madhwal missed his lengths, and Ashutosh gave him back-to-back sixes as a punishment. After hitting another six, Harpreet reduced the score to 28 from four overs.
Kings needed a respectable 25 off 18, but Ashutosh and Harpreet had enough breathing room to see out Bumrah’s last over for just three runs thanks to the required run-rate of just seven. However, Coetzee’s remarkable ability to destroy alliances struck once more, as at the beginning of the eighteenth over, he had Ashutosh caught behind deep midwicket.
Then, in the 19th over, Hardik removed Harpreet. With Hardik’s final ball, Rabada, the No. 11, hit a six, requiring 13 off seven balls. It was reduced to 11 off six with a single off the final ball of that over and a wide off the first ball of the last over, delivered by Akash Madhwal.
Nevertheless, Mumbai could enjoy a fantastic escape when he was run out trying to score a second run on the next ball.
Hardik’s View
At least when it comes to exciting thrillers, Punjab Kings is the side to watch in the Indian Premier League. This season, they have already had four final-over finishes; this Thursday’s may have been the most devastating of them. In their pursuit of 193, they were regressing – 14 for 4 in the first 2.1 overs – but once more, little-known players rose to the occasion to be recognized.
“A victory is a victory”—Hardik is happy to receive points despite the “unbelievable” Ashutosh. While Sam Curran was “frustrated” by losing early wickets once more, he was also relieved that the middle order battled to extend the game.

The 25-year-old Ashutosh Sharma, who had only played 14 Twenty20 matches prior to this season and made his IPL debut, almost accomplished the seemingly unachievable. At No. 8, he hit 61 off of 28 balls while batting. With such confidence, he could get low and give a rampaging Jasprit Bumrah a six-ball. At the beginning of the 16th over, Punjab’s chances of winning were only 9.5%. They were 79.12% favorites at the finish. Akash Madhwal was hit for 24 runs by Ashutosh.
Mumbai knew they had won by the narrowest of margins when they removed him in the eighteenth over and kept Punjab from scoring the final 25 runs. During the presentation, Hardik Pandya remarked, “A very good game of cricket.” “It seems like everyone’s composure was tried. We did discuss before the game that our characters will be scrutinized, and I don’t believe anything else was mentioned.
When Punjab is down 193 runs at 14 for 4, it is understandable to feel in control of the match. However, we also knew that the IPL often produced matches like this one, when the other team might come back and how, and that’s precisely what happened.
“[Ashutosh was] astounding. Playing with such confidence and ease, striking nearly every ball off the bat, he is clearly aware of what he wants to accomplish. It’s amazing. Very pleased for him, only for what is ahead.”
Punjab’s interim captain, Sam Curran, was left cursing the errors of the upper order but was encouraged by the fight his team was still able to muster. This group enjoys tight games. Regretfully, again another setback. We performed a great job, in my opinion, to come that close. Another amazing knock from a boy so young, Ashutosh.
“We have undoubtedly lost a good number of early wickets this tournament. That has been really annoying. However, given how the lads have consistently kept the game tight, I suppose… Although being that close is undoubtedly upsetting for them, it’s quite amazing coming from some of those younger guys in the middle order.
“You see someone like Ashutosh who has the strength and dexterity to take down and sweep pace bowlers. He simply has amazing talent. Those players are playing exceptionally well, which is a huge blessing for the squad. We’re hoping to win the next few close games, and you never know—we could be the team to gain that momentum.”
With two victories in their last seven games, Punjab is now down to ninth position in the standings. Curran stated, “It’s been a little bit of a rollercoaster ride.” Gaining a game and a few close finishes in the final over. There are numerous advantages. I have complete faith in our team to make this work. We’re going to keep going. We’ll continue to smile. Tomorrow, as the sun rises, we’ll resume our training and hard work.”
Mumbai is in the lower half of the rankings as well, and their sole concern is moving up. Not the method they use. “We did talk during the timeout,” Hardik remarked. “You know what, we’ll make sure that we keep fighting and scrapping in this game, regardless of how good we appear. Yes, there are many aspects of bowling that we may observe to ensure that we don’t bowl the soft balls that we also provided.
Although we were a little soft in some departments and overs, the hitters did play some really excellent shots at one point in the game, which kind of cost us the victory. Still, a victory is a victory.”
Bumrah On His Man Of The Match Performance
The strike bowler for the Mumbai Indians took two wickets in the second over of the Punjab Kings chase.
Given that many Twenty20 matches are won or lost in the latter stages of the bowling innings, the Mumbai Indians frequently use Jasprit Bumrah as their secret weapon. Having his abilities at such a high pressure point is always beneficial. However, the man himself wishes he could take aim at opponents far sooner.
Bumrah remarked, “Of course, you want to make an impact early on when the ball does something,” after entering the game to bowl the second over against Punjab Kings and taking two wickets off the bat immediately and one more later to stop Punjab Kings from chasing down 193. “Because the ball probably does swing throughout the first two overs in this style. And I do play Test cricket when I want to bowl more. That’s where my drive to bowl more is satisfied. You definitely want to have an impact during the first two overs of this format when the ball swings, and I’m happy to help out when I can.”
Record-breaking totals and higher scoring rates are being observed in this year’s IPL. But Bumrah has managed to maintain his unflinching frugal nature, going at a barely credible economy rate of 5.96. In seven games, he has also taken 13 wickets, placing him at the top of the tree.
“Obviously this format is a little difficult for the bowlers because the batsmanship is going up,” he stated. “The batting line-up gets deeper and deeper, and the bowler becomes half the bowler when you get an extra option, so the time constraints [over-rate penalties] and the Impact Player rule do not aid the bowler too much.
However, it seems to me that none of those things are under your control. What you can do is make every effort to prepare and support yourself in any circumstance, since doing so will put you in a positive frame of mind and enable you to perform with a grin on your face.”
“Whenever the chance arises. From wherever I am, I do deliver a message. However, Bumrah noted that it might occasionally be challenging to convey a lot of information in a hurry. “But yes, I am always there if anybody needs help because you don’t want to give too many messages as well because the bowler is already under pressure and when too many messages come, you don’t land here or there, you land in the middle.”
