Ipswich Town’s 2-1 Victory Over Coventry City: Premier League Highlights
Ipswich Town secured a crucial 2-1 victory against Coventry City in the EFL Championship in a thrilling encounter at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
With three points more than Leeds in third place, the Tractor Boys can return to the top flight for the first time since 2001–02 with a draw against virtually relegated Huddersfield on Saturday.
Within ten minutes, Kieffer Moore put the visitors ahead, but Coventry rallied and Haji Wright tied the score just over an hour later.
However, less than five minutes later, center-back Cameron Burgess of the Coventry Building Society Arena proved to be the unexpected hero.
This made Town the first freshly promoted team in the history of the second division to win 27 league games in a season and put them in position to achieve a historic double promotion.
Ipswich, who understood the importance of winning at the CBS, jumped out of the starting blocks to prevent Coventry from establishing any kind of rhythm, and they took the lead in less than ten minutes.
After Wes Burns easily dispatched left-back Jay Dasilva, Moore arrived and scored the first goal after Burns had the presence of mind to pull the ball back into space.
After that, Coventry had the majority of the play and were clearly superior. They couldn’t capitalize on their domination for the most part, but after a little over thirty minutes, they ought to have taken the lead.
Wright was denied as he fired the rebound goalward by Ipswich goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky after Kasey Palmer’s strike bounced off the feet of Sam Morsy and Burns.
Burns slid past Dasilva once more in first-half stoppage time, sending in a wonderful cross that was met by Nathan Broadhead, whose downward header Brad Collins saved.
After the break, Broadhead was able to gather the ball and smash a shot off the crossbar due to a poor clearing by Collins. However, immediately after, Wright equalized the score after being passed by Palmer and putting a shot past Hladky.
However, parity did not last long. Leif Davis appeared to have wasted his left-wing free-kick, but Burgess recovered and fired in off the inside of the post after Milan van Ewijk was unable to clear at the back post.
There were plenty of anxiety in the away end as the minutes passed, especially after an unusual referee change that resulted in an extra four minutes put on. Coventry was still a threat, so when the final whistle went, there was a noticeable sense of relief.
