Leicester City’s 4-0 Victory Over Tranmere: Jordan Ayew’s Debut Goal Leads the Charge
Leicester City defeated Tranmere Rovers 4-0 at the King Power Stadium to easily advance to the Carabao Cup third round.
In his debut start for the Foxes, Jordan Ayew scored first, then in a commanding display, Wilfried Ndidi, Harry Winks, and Stephy Mavididi all added goals to the score.
After making eight changes from their weekend loss to Fulham, Leicester had some time to get into the game, but Jordan Ayew’s debut start gave the Foxes a slim halftime lead.
An imposing figure During the second half, Leicester displayed their superiority in the Premier League by scoring two goals from the penalty spot, followed by goals from Wilfred Ndidi and Harry Winks, giving Steve Cooper his first competitive victory as manager.
Before kickoff, there was a minute of applause to honor the late Sven-Goran Eriksson, the former Foxes manager who passed away on Monday.
King Power Stadium was thinly crowded and had a low key, somewhat disjointed start to the match, but the hosts, led by Nigel Adkins, quickly began to exert dominance over their opponents, who were still undefeated in the fourth division.
After 20 minutes, Joe Murphy, a 43-year-old player-coach, was put to the test when he dove across to stop Ayew’s long-range darting attempt. Murphy lined up between the sticks for the visitors.
Ndidi was put through on goal after a clever interchange between Oliver Skipp and Winks, the former Spurs duo, but he dragged his shot wide over the goal’s face.
For the first thirty minutes, League Two Tranmere held their own, but as the half went on, their superior opponents began to show their mettle. Skipp raced clear once more, but Murphy had to step up once more to keep it goalless.
Ayew’s brilliant move to shift the ball onto his right from outside the box and blast it past Murphy in the 38th minute broke Tranmere’s resistance, even if he got his hands dirty.
After Connor Jennings took down Ricardo Pereira in the area, Leicester had a chance to double their lead in the 51st minute when Mavididi hit a powerful, low shot into the bottom-left corner.
With twenty minutes remaining, Winks’ pass was diverted by Ayew into Ndidi’s path, who converted from close range, putting the home team out of sight.
Winks grabbed the ball on the edge of the box at a corner to finish off an incredible evening, and Leicester showed no signs of slowing down and were looking for more.
