Mumbai City FC Advances to ISL Final 2024 After Beating FC Goa
Mumbai City FC has secured their spot in the Indian Super League (ISL) final after a remarkable 2-0 victory against FC Goa in the semi-final second leg.
In the second leg of the semi-final at the Mumbai Football Arena on Monday, Mumbai City FC defeated FC Goa 2-0 (5-2 on aggregate) to go to the Indian Super League (ISL) final.
Following their thrilling 3-2 triumph in the first leg at the Fatorda Stadium last week, in which they rallied for three goals starting in the ninetieth minute, Mumbai completed the score with goals from Lallianzuala Chhangte and Jorge Pereyra Diaz.
Mumbai, who won the championship in 2021, will play Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who defeated Odisha FC 3-2 on aggregate in the other semi-final, for the championship.
Even though the visitors got off to a quick start, Mumbai took charge of the game and held the advantage in possession in the first half. The first meaningful opportunity of the game was generated by Chhangte, who went on to have the most impressive performance of the game, but his attempt from a tight angle was blocked. From then on, the hosts applied constant pressure and were little unfortunate to hit the post twice.
The ball was blasted in by Yoell van Nieff from the left, and although Tiri managed to get a solid header from close range, it struck the post. After a span of twelve minutes, Diaz skillfully sent a through ball to Chhangte, but his shot struck the far post instead of connecting cleanly.
Mumbai increased their pressure in the second half, and they were rewarded when Argentine attacker Diaz poked in the goal from a corner from inside the six-yard box in the 69th minute.
Fourteen minutes later, Chhangte extended the advantage with an incredible run from his own half. After Goa exerted some brief pressure, Mumbai counterattacked, with Vikram Partap Singh hitting a brilliant through ball to Chhangte. The 26-year-old winger avoided the keeper by maintaining composure and then tapped the ball into the empty net.
Saturday is the day of the final.

Indian Super League Winners List
The top division of Indian football leagues for men is called the Indian Super League (ISL). Currently consisting of 12 clubs, the league is run by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in collaboration with Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), its commercial partner.
The 22-round regular season is followed by playoffs involving the top six clubs, with the ISL Final serving as the championship match. The season runs from September to March. The team with the most points at the conclusion of the regular season is crowned the winner and given the League Winners’ Shield.
For the time being, the promotion and relegation processes are only followed by the league. ISL teams advance to the Asian continental club competitions, while regular season winners advance straight to the AFC Champions League 2 group stage in the next season.
The competition was established on October 21, 2013, with the goal of promoting and growing football as a sport in India. October 2014 saw the start of play with eight teams. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC), which is in charge of overseeing Asian football, did not formally recognize the competition throughout its first three seasons. It was organized similarly to India’s top Twenty20 franchise-based cricket league, the Indian Premier League.
Every season saw matches every day for a total of three months, from October to December. But prior to the 2017–18 campaign, the league gained recognition by the AFC, increased its roster to ten teams, and extended its season to six months.
Six clubs have taken home the title since the league’s inception: ATK (3), Chennaiyin (2), Bengaluru (1), Mumbai City (1), Hyderabad (1), and Mohun Bagan (1). Mumbai City has won the League Winners’ Shield twice since its inception in the 2019–20 season, while Mohun Bagan, Jamshedpur, and Goa have each won once. In the 2020–21 season, Mumbai City became the only side to win both the League Winners’ Shield and the ISL Final in the same season.
