After the match, when event organizers gave him a golden racquet, Rafael Nadal expressed his regret over “nearly everything” that comes with being a professional tennis player.

“It has been a dream come true to be able to play for almost 20 years being competitive, having the chance to play in the best places in the world, which I watched on TV as a kid,” he stated. “I am incredibly grateful for all of the love and support I have gotten. Over the years, there was an incredible adventure at every single tournament.

“I feel very fortunate to be a tennis player.”

On October 10, Rafael Nadal, 38, declared his retirement from tennis following the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga the following month.

The match on Saturday was advertised by the Saudi event organizers as maybe Nadal’s final singles match as a professional.
