Garcia had medical treatment early in the second set, and it still looked like she was having problems with an injury to her right shoulder.

Collins held serve during the first set after breaking to lead 5-3. In the second set, she broke in the third game and never looked back, winning in one hour and 19 minutes.

Collins is the lowest-ranked semi-finalist in the competition at 53rd, having been to the Miami semi-finals six years ago as a qualifier.

The 30-year-old American claimed the statistics didn’t reflect the real situation, despite having a 4-0 record against Garcia and having not yet dropped a set against the Frenchwoman.

“I believe that opposing someone like Caro makes me more focused. Collins remarked, “I know I don’t want to give her an inch or she can get in there.”
Garcia claimed to have experienced the tempo of consecutive competitions.

“It has been an arduous two weeks for my body, starting from the back and then the shoulder that returned,” she informed reporters, clarifying that the shoulder problem was a resurgence of an earlier ailment.

She remarked, “I think it’s nothing too serious but (shoulder) is always quite problematic for a tennis player,” before praising Collins for “an amazing match”.

Collins said that her play had a more casual appearance, but she denied that this was because she was going to leave the game at the end of the year. Collins plans to retire at the end of the year.

“I believe I’m feeling rather at ease, but there could be a lot of reasons for that. It’s my new pastime. I’m doing more Pilates, running, and golfing, among other things,” she remarked.

“This is my dog. Because I get to spend time with him at night, I’m feeling at ease. She smiled and answered, “I’m not sure.”

Collins will play the victor of the other quarterfinal on Wednesday, which is between Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova and her compatriot Jessica Pegula. Alexandrova defeated world number one Iga Swiatek in the previous round.
