Aaron Jones’ 94* Shines in USA’s Dominating Victory over Canada in T20 World Cup 2024
Aaron Jones’ scintillating unbeaten 94* during the T20 World Cup 2024 clash against Canada not only propelled USA to victory but also served as a testament to his skill set in the T20 format.
Jones claimed he shown he was “good enough” to compete at the highest level, despite questions around his spot in the T20I team.
Canada 194/5 (Navneet 61, Harmeet 1-27) lost against USA 197/3 (Aaron 94*, kaleem 1-34) by 7 Wickets.
In the T20 World Cup 2024 match against Canada, USA batter Aaron Jones believed that his knock “opens eyes of some people around the world” that he is “good enough” to play T20s.
At 42 for 2 in the seventh over, when the USA target of 195 seemed too much, Jones struck an undefeated 94, the second-highest individual score on T20 World Cup debut. The co-hosts, however, not only made it there, they did so with seven wickets and 14 balls remaining.
“Sometimes as a cricketer, you could go a bit under the radar if you have a few low scores,” Jones stated. “I always have faith in myself and am confident in my ability to perform at all levels. That I prevailed and won the match for the United States makes me happy. I hope it convinces some people worldwide that I am capable of playing Twenty20 cricket.
“I work hard, I have faith in myself, and I basically take criticism as fuel. I’m confident in my ability to compete at the greatest level, and I’ll give it my all if given the chance. I approached tonight’s batting match as just another game to battle for myself and get my team as close to the line as possible; if we can get both close to and over the line, that’s fantastic for the team.”
Jones’s inning at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas, in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, came at a critical moment for Jones. He played for the Seattle Orcas in the first season of Major League Cricket, the USA’s T20 league; however, he was cut and did not receive a selection from any of the teams in the MLC draft that took place earlier this year. On June 16, a second draft will take place to allow teams to finish building their squads. His place in the T20I side was also under investigation.
“When I wasn’t selected in the Major League, I just took it as a stepping stone in the journey,” he stated. “It happens; I would have wanted to get drafted. Hopefully, those who are unfamiliar with me or USA cricket will become aware of me after tonight’s innings. We are undoubtedly willing to perform at the greatest level since we have excellent players and a wealth of talent.”
Jones and Andries Gous, who struck a 46-ball 65, shared a 131-run third-wicket partnership off just 58 balls. The Canadian fast bowlers were fired up when they teamed up, and the USA was on the verge of a historic victory when their alliance came to an end.

“When I went out to bat, I told Gous, ‘right now we are in a spot of bother’,” Jones explained. “We must be bold and upbeat if we are to win the game. Either we try to achieve the score, or we go down, die hard, and be bowled out for whatever score. We want to play intelligent cricket, be courageous, and have a positive attitude. We want to be brave, but we also want to make wise shooting choices. Don’t sweep if you are aware that you don’t do so. Even if you are aware that you are not a good foot player, be assertive.
Is this the best knock ever for USA?
Jones remarked, “To be honest, it’s up there.” “Probably the greatest knock I’ve ever received as a USA player, though it might be second only to the century I scored when we were granted ODI status. This one is unique as it’s the World Cup, we are playing in the opening match with everyone watching, and we know that Canada is one of our adversaries.”
The USA will continue to play brave cricket against Pakistan and India in ten days, according to Jones, when they play them at the same location on Thursday.
“We just want to keep winning as much as possible, of course we can’t win every single game for the rest of our lives,” he stated. “I don’t think there will be any changes to our plan for the remainder of the competition. The kind of cricket we want to play is bold, aggressive, and intelligent. We have the same attitude heading into the Pakistan match. No matter who we play against, we want to play courageous cricket.”
