Gujarat Titans Secure Warrier as Shami’s Stand-In; Mumbai Indians Make Tactical Move For IPL 2023
Gujarat Titans have enlisted the services of seasoned fast bowler Sandeep Warrier to fill in for the injured Mohammed Shami while In a strategic shift for IPL 2024, Mumbai Indians have replaced the injured Dilshan Madushanka with the promising South African talent, Kwena Maphaka.
Warrier, a distinguished India and Tamil Nadu bowler with prior IPL experience, brings a wealth of skill and expertise to the Titans’ lineup.
Having featured in five IPL matches previously, Warrier has showcased his prowess while representing Kolkata Knight Riders in the years 2019 to 2021. Despite stints with Royal Challengers Bangalore (2013-15) and Mumbai Indians (2023), Warrier’s opportunity to play remained elusive until now.
Warrier’s inclusion bolsters Gujarat Titans’ formidable fast-bowling unit, which includes the likes of Mohit Sharma, Josh Little, Umesh Yadav, Spencer Johnson, Kartik Tyagi, Darshan Nalkande, and Sushant Mishra.
The absence of Mohammed Shami, recovering from ankle surgery, extends to the upcoming T20 World Cup, with an expected return in late 2024. Additionally, the Titans will be without Matthew Wade for initial fixtures due to his commitment with Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield final, while Robin Minz’s participation remains uncertain.
Under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, replacing Hardik Pandya, the Titans commence their campaign against Mumbai Indians in an eagerly anticipated clash, setting the stage for an electrifying IPL 2024 season.

Mumbai Indians Make Tactical Move:
South Africa’s Rising Star Maphaka Replaces Injured Madushanka.
In a strategic shift for IPL 2024, Mumbai Indians have replaced the injured Dilshan Madushanka with the promising South African talent, Kwena Maphaka. This alteration comes as Madushanka, the Sri Lankan fast bowler, suffered a hamstring injury during a recent tour of Bangladesh, rendering him unfit for the entire T20 tournament.
Madushanka, whose swinging prowess with the new ball garnered attention during the 2023 ODI World Cup, was a key investment for Mumbai Indians at INR 4.6 crore (USD 554,000 approx.). However, his absence opens doors for seventeen-year-old Maphaka, who showcased his skills by being named Player of the Tournament in the recent Under-19 World Cup.
Maphaka, a student at St Stithians in Johannesburg, boasts impressive statistics from the youth World Cup, claiming 21 wickets in six ODIs with an average of 9.71 and an economy rate of 3.81. His left-arm seaming abilities, bowling at speeds of 140 kph and generating inswing, draw comparisons to Madushanka’s style.
With Maphaka joining Mumbai Indians’ ranks, including established bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and under the guidance of coaches like Lasith Malinga, the team is poised for a dynamic bowling lineup. However, considerations loom as another potential starter, Gerald Coetzee, is recovering from a groin injury, potentially requiring new captain Hardik Pandya to contribute with the ball alongside the Bumrah-led attack.
